Item sent via DPD no delivery attempt and returned to sender

I sent a parcel to my mother in Spain , Parcel is 14kg and the customs forms filled out perfectly ( item passed through customs no issues ) . The parcel landed at Alicante where my mom lives and then sent on a 500 mile trip to Barcelona put back on the plane and sent directly back to me without a delivery attempt.

I paid via parcel monkey to DPD.

I was wondering what happens now as I paid a fair whack for this to be delivered and all it's done is a round trip for a couple of weeks. Will it be free/refunded as no attempt was made.
