Theoretically, If i were to build a craft that could travel faster that the speed of light, fly out of the earth's atmosphere, and come back down the same path I had went up.
Would I see myself shoot through me?

This also assumes that you could slow down to a complete stop and then start in the opposite direction at the speed of light in practically zero time.

if you could fly faster than the speed of light you could go back in time...
this is a long shot but
but possibly moving back in the opposite direction might speed up time...and hence you would be in the exact same position and time will not have moved...look I just did it now...!

All I know is if you had a twin and you left your twin back on Earth. Travelled at the speed or faster than light for say a few hours, you could come back to Earth having only aged a few hours, yet your twin could be much older, by decades.

I think that is right lol. Quantum mechanics or something?

the stars you see in the night sky are as they looked millions of years ago as that is how long it took the light to reach us... if we could travel faster than the speed of light towards them than we would be going back in time.

again.. this is a theoretical question.. people need to let go of reaction times ect...

That may be true but slowing time is different to reversing time. You would need to increase speed exponentially to more than an infinite degree, which is obviously not possible. I may just be talking BS, what the hell do I know :lol:

I'm disappointed that none of the geeks here have mentioned the Picard Maneuever:

This is pretty much the same setup as the question, Picard's ship was facing off against an enemy vessel at sublight speeds - Picard then jumped to warpspeed and dropped back to normal space right in front of the enemy vessel. At that point the enemy vessel could see two identical ships, the light still travelling from the ship's original position (overtaken by the ship when it went to warp) and the light reflecting off the ship in its new position.

With regards to your question, if you jumped back to your original position and took that path you wouldn't see yourself as the light is moving very quickly. However if you jumped to lightspeed and then quickly u-turned then jumped half the distance and used a telescope forward you would see your ship at sublight speeds before it went to warp as you effectively overtook that light.

In a similar vein if you jumped to lightspeed and then looked back at earth with a powerful telescope you would be looking at earth's past - the further you jumped, the further back you'd see although much of the light would have dissipated.

Also interesting with time is that it's not linear in that it's not the same for everyone, if you took twin brothers and kept one on earth then put another in a spaceship that cruised just below the speed of light. When the twin returned from the spaceship he would be younger than his twin on earth.

I was better at this when I was 13, too many dead brain cells these days :lol: I was just trying to mentally work out a 1 second dash from a-b at different speeds, thought I had it then looked at it another way and my calculations appeared to be 1 second out. Moral: Never employ me as a navigator on an FTL cruiser cos you won't get where you expect you were going :lol:

Eh? I suppose the ones that are a million light years away would be - what about closer ones eg 4 light years away!

Time would travel slower when you approach the speed of light - but what you suggest wouldnt make time go backwards - just the appearance of the star you are looking at.

we are not travelling back in time - we are just looking at images portrayed by light

I reckon that, should you make such a trip, and did meet yourself on the return journey, then everybody else would be treated to a wonderful fireworks display whilst you would have collided with your self with such a clout that you would instantly vapourise, without having had a clue it was going to happen. What a way to go....
