I've apparently won a free holiday...

I enter competitions like no ones business, but just had a call to say I've won a holiday for 4 people to either Portugal, Costa Del Sol or Tenerife. They pay for flights and luxury accomodation and I just pay booking fee of 29.50 pp and airport tax.

Company is lacosta.com. I have to go to a presentation where I get my booking details etc. Looking at website, seems all above board but always a little wary ha.

    yeah thats what Im thinking.

my friend has just won one of those..they try sell you timeshare..just say i will think about it and go on cheap holiday...she is on hers now!

can you remember where you applied for this one..i want to go on one.

    But seriously, its a timeshare.
Dont trust any competition where you have to pay only a specific part (like airport fees)

Here you go. We went on one of their "free holidays" 18m ago to Scotland. You have to listen to everything for an hour or so, and then we just kept saying "in a few years this will be perfect, but until the kids are older then thanks, but no thanks"

time share, is it my comp thats slow or hukd, when i typed this there wasnt a reply - lol

I had the same after winning a golfing holiday.

Read up about them online and it wasn't positive, said we wouldnt be attending and they were quite rude and asked why etc so i told them the truth.

They kept ringing several times a week until we told them politely where to go

But was it worth going then - just for the holiday. I can handle a bit of hard-sell tactics for a free holiday :-)

cant see how to join club though

    +1 lol...

you havent really "won" anything if you have to pay something-its a con! who ever heard of paying to collect a prize?

you need to be a homeowner and be employed full time. i worked for one of these company's when i was younger.. it's a scam and they will keep pestering you and give you the hard sell.... DONT BRING ANY BANK CARDS TO THE PRESENTATION they can be very convincing!! xx

If you know you don't want a timeshare (and we knew that, and would get hard-sell tactics) then no problem. TBH the salesman wasn't that hard-sell, and as a salesman myself, it was so easy to read the script he was taught with. We just laughed it off in the end.

dont do it....if theres a chance ur gonna get convinced into shelling out loads ur gonna really regret it....these ppl arent pleasnt ppl....very cocky hard sellers

that has to be the best advice, if you've no money or cards on you, they can try as hard as they want and they're getting [email protected]@@ out of you, lol

these people make money from ripping people off, why on earth would anyone want a "cheap" holiday out of them, they are not a nice company and have no morals

lol my dad went on one of these "free holidays" they paid for the hotels and everything
they got very pusshy so he moved hotels, when he said he didnt want the time share they told him to get out of the hotel within 2 hours but then he laughed and said he had already gone

Could try leaving all cards behind then telling them you feel ill. Fluey. Tell them one of your friends has recently returned from mexico. That should end things quickly. Rest of holiday to recuperate

I went to a car show with 4 mates a few years ago and we all entered a competition for a holiday - and we all won! When I looked into it the holidays were offered by a company well known for this sort of scam - everybody "wins" but you have to go to their high pressure timeshare sales meeting to "collect" it.

When the company called one of my mates to "confirm" if he has won, they asked a few questions about his home ownership and job. When he said that he was not employed and didn't own the house the company said that he didn't qualify as a winner! I seem to recall that there was very small print that we found on the back of competition tickets later which did state that only homeowners could enter.

Of the 5 of us who went to the show only one decided to go for the "free" holiday. He had to attend a presentation in Birmingham. The presentation and following "discussions" (very heavily laid on sales pitch with 2 sales people per potential sucker) went on for over 4 hours. He knew that he wouldn't get the holiday until the "discussions" were finished so he waited to they finally gave up on him.

In the end, those who didn't sign up for timeshares did get vouchers for free holiday flights and hotelsfor two - on condition that the punter paid for food in the hotel at full hotel menu prices, with a minimum spend (I think it was about £60 per person per day, but not 100% sure of the amounts now). They also had to pay for all "taxes" which added up to quite a bit. There was no choice of winning dates either - it was go the next week or lose out! Strangely enough those people who did sign up on the day happened to "win" a much better holiday.

These types of business are quite legal but they do often operate very close to the limits of the law. As far as I'm concerned they are scammers. They are not advertising holiday competitions. They are just misrepresenting their businesses. The holidays are effectively a cashback offer for the mugs who buy into their overpriced timeshare schemes. Anybody who doesn't sign up gets a vouches which is effectively worthless once the fees are taken into account.
