it should still work as an external HD, even tho you have formatted it. Surely you have just deleted all the information?

Or have you deleted the programme which syncs your HD with your computer?

How did you format it? Fat, fat32 or NTFS? Only NTFS will show the full size of the drive, when you plug it in does it show up under my cumputer?

If not right click "My Computer" from the start menu and select manage, you will then get a new box(pane) open in the left hand column you will see a option "disk management" if you just single left click this you will see all connected drives in the lower right hand side box, you may need to reformat it to NTFS or right click and there should be an option "make active" or whatever its called.

It was being awkward so I reformatted it as NTFS which was what it recommended. Now it's showing as completely full and I can't access it at all, and I can't reformat it at all either. it must be knackered Which is rubbish as I really need reliable back up!

It does show up under my computer, I'm stumped as to what to do next!

go to Start-Run and enter "diskmgmt.msc"
Do you see your ext harddrive (obviously plug it in first)

Yes, and it says it's healthy!

If its knackered and you can't get it going would you consider selling it?

you should reformat it there. It worked for me

You absolute honey, it seemed to work, I'll leave it to back up overnight - thanks xx

Ok, it's still being dodgy. It allowed me to back up me entire pc, but when I try to do a quick back up - you know, jus tht emost recently changed files etc, it says there has been a disk failure. It's just not practical or feasible for me to do an entire pc backup every time I need to save important work, any more suggestions?

Can anyone help?

hmm im completely stumped then. Have you removed the harddrive from the enclosure and put it in your pc?

It's a laptop, so it won't fit in

That's what I was hoping for too kungfu LOL

Are you using software to try and back up your laptop to the hard drive? if you are you might want to just copy the important files/folders over to the external hard drive.

errr.... well nothing in any post to say that the op got it fixed and as this is a problem that I had with buffalo backup software I thought I would let her know an easy way to sort it

Nope, still not resolved. I still can't back up files and folders, I need to do a complete reformat and whole new back up every time.

I will try simply dragging and dropping to see if it works, thanks
