Ok so we don't seem to have hot water in our house again. Last time this happened I think it was because the pilot light had gone out or something? Could this be right, and if so how do I get it working again?! Or is this a really really stupid question and I should know better....!

this is not true u do have hot water

well surely if you have a pilot light you can see if it is on - lol

You really should know how to relight the pilot light! Theres usually some basic instructions on the boiler though!

Yes you should check the pilot light, if its gone out follow the instructions to restart it. They can be a pain to restart though good luck!

harlzter can you come on msn please

I'm watching holiday airline!

Instructions should be on boiler for relighting the pilot :?

Nah there's no instructions anywhere! Its just a plain white metal box in the bathroom cupboard!!

no door or flap?

On our boiler you have to press and turn the gas release button and keep it pressed while you press the ignitor button till it lights, I think they all work on the same principle, its just going to be a matter of finding the right buttons. Or leaving it till you can get someone else to do it!

Ours has a removable front panel that doesnt look like it opens you just lift it from the sides then the bottom piece unslots and the whole panel comes off.

Er not that I can see. If I try to remove the whole front panel I'm not going to break it am I? lol

use a kettle

Is it Gas?

Original Poster

Haha I would use a kettle but thats broken too!!! I've been boiling water on the hob in order to make gravy the past week!!!

Yeah its a gas boiler, I don't know what type - its big and white with a panel along the bottom containing a pressure gauge, hot water temp control, some buttons for the timer and a power light!

:s

Does it have a big power dial, somewhere on the panel? Usually if you turn that the boiler will start again. Or alternatively, there might be some kind of button underneath the boiler.

There should be a service panel to take off that will tell you the model number etc, I've always been able to search google for a pdf manual for any appliances that don't have manuals. A pilot light will go out for a reason I would find out the reason for the pilot light going out before relighting it, gas disruption, lack of pressure in the system etc.

I've tried cutting the electric supply and switching back on, but that doesn't do anything. There's no button underneath or anywhere else.

Ok I'll go have another look for numbers etc. Except now you are scaring me if I should be solving the problem first! Lol.

I'm sure you can provide some boiler picture pron for a plumber to look at lol. They might be able to help you diagnose for free!

must be the season for it - we have no hot water either, ours hasn't worked since Thursday & BG have been out twice already to replace the main system board & something else but still nothing - gotta wait for someone else to come out Monday now

Sounds like your boiler is as bad as mine.
Have you got a switch you can turn it on and off with?
If so leave a hot water tap running, switch it off then back on again.
Sometimes mine trips out for no reason, at the very top of the boiler there is a button which can be pressed down which resets everything again.
These work for me, so if you have either of them switches give it a try.
By the way when did you last have it serviced, someone may correct me but are they supposed to be checked by a corgi registered person anually?

Mines packed up this week too. Only get hot water when the heating is on full whack.
British Gas came out this morning & got it working. An hour later when i went to take a shower - no hot water. Ours is an 18 year old combi, but as we are renting, cant do anything about it!
Grrrr!

thanks owlass beginning to regret it alreay, althought will be able to block the massive airvent in the lounge off now

Has the red light come on the boiler? If so the pressures low and you need to fill it back to 1 1/2.

People.... people..... people..... having seen 7+ different boilers in my short life so far your comments of buttons here lights there will make no sense to the OP what's so ever, they ALL differ so immensely! my current boiler has dials, lights and a full LED display :w00t: it could even be something to do with her hot water tank, have you tried turning on the immersion see if you can get any hot water that way?

Or even the little box that attaches to the tank that regulates when hot water is given to taps/radiators , had these replaced a couple of times.
