I've left £100 in the Cashpoint

OK, first things first, I'm a really silly boy, and feel like a prize clown. I drew £100 out of the cashpoint on Xmas eve, but then took my card and left the money in the machine. The transaction has not been reversed on my account, so i guess that someone has made off with the loot. Does anyone know if I have any way of getting this back or having the bank investigate CCTV etc to see where it went?

I got the money, you wanna split 50 50?

well it is your own fault.

Talk to the bank and see what they say...

If you dont take money after a certain period of time, and no one else took it - it will get pulled back in to the machine. Go in and ask them about it

Yes, I am fully aware of that. You're pretty sharp aren't you. :x

cash machines suck the money back into the machine if its not taken..

thats what that beeping noise is when it detects money in the slot thingi.
    You shouldnt be charged.

It does the same with your card as well.

check your statements.. and tell your bank

Can I suggest that you go back to bed and try getting out the other side. I'm fully aware of that one.

Do you have online banking, so you can check youe statement online?

Yes, I've checked and the transaction has gone through. I'm with Nationwide but withdrew from a Lloyds machine though, so I'm hoping that the machine took the money back but it takes a couple of working days for lloyds to notify nationwide. I think I'll give both a call this morning and see what they say, but not very hopeful.

not sure how cctv will help, wont b very good quality and all it will show is sum1 taking money from a machine like everyone does, as has been said before....after a certain amount of time the money is sucked bk in, if i was after u in the quewe i would have taken it for sho.....i think most ppl would tbh so i guess if theres no luck contacting the bank ull just have to take it on the chin....im sure ull never make this mistake again.

That's true but if someone did take the money then there won't be a lot the OP can do about it. If someone saw £100 there and hadn't seen him walk off they'd have probably taken it thinking the machine was broke. And I doubt the bank will do anything about it if it has been taken because it's negligence on his part.

Same as if you go online and check your account or statement and fail to log out - if someone logs on and goes straight into your account and takes your money the bank don't have to do anything about it.

hmmm yeah but the money only stays out in the open for around 20 secs.. but it is possible for some1 to walk past and take it.. but then again if there wasnt anyone waitting or wanting to use the cash point its unlikely that some1 would of taken it.

The online banking thing also has a timer on it, if you open your bank page and leave it for 30secs next time you click an action the page will expaire..
But yes it is possible in both cases to be "done over"

Im letting the OP know that money gets sucked back into machines if it is not taken..

If this happend to me, I would check my statement and see if the £100 has been deducted.

I think it all depends on whether the money was sucked back in or whether someone took it on whether they will get the £100 back.

It wouldn't harm you to contact the branch of Lloyds.
If the cash was retracted back into the ATM and that wasn't flagged up the member of staff responsible for filling the machine would notice a discrepancy between the totals and you letting them know would sure speed up the process of them handing the cash back to you.

Badly worded I know but you get my drift, my wife used to work for a bank and dealt with ATM's for a while.

i was walking past a bank last year ..and the street was busy and there was a £20 note in it..no one walking past had noticed it ...but it doesnt go back into the machine speedy fast..

If you draw from a non bank machine,(not your own bank) and it is sucked back it can still take 3 working days for them to notify your own bank, a reversal will show but will take time. Dispute the transaction if it is showing on your online statement.Tell them the money didn't come out as it sounds like you are not too sure (liquid lunch??). Good luck.

P.S. did you actually see the money, could the machine have been out of notes???? Very common at Xmas.

Thanks everyone for the good advice. For future reference to anyone who is interested, I've spoken to lloyds, who advised that i need to raise the query with my own bank. Then spoke to Nationwide and I need to pop in there to pick up and complete a Cashpoint Query form, they can then look into it for me. Sounds fairly promising though, and i wasn't expecting anything really. Valuable lesson learned. If out drinking at Christmas, make sure you have enough money before you start !!

it can take up to something like 45 days to get your money back, i did not get money from the machine once, but it took it from my account and had to wait for ages to get it back (lloyds TSB)

yes this happened to me i took £20 out i took my card put it back in my purse and walked off. I told the bank as soon as I realised and they said to call back in a couple of days when they totted up the cashpoint to see if it was £20 over. Luckily it had got sucked back in.

Ring the bank and ring the local police station
you may be surprised as there are a lot of honest people out there too...

they may have handed it in.

if i saw 100 quid i wouldnt take it....id feel for whoever left it and try return it to brnach stating time i found it so could be returned to rightful owner. at the end onf the day 100 quid is a lot of money and could mean a heck of a lot to a poor soul.

im hoping u get it sorted matey

Technically if you walk away and someone takes the money out then it is your fault.

However my Dad did this a few years ago with Yorkshire bank, he got his pin wrong twice, then on the third go got it right, but when it told him to take the card he thought he must have got the pin wrong again and walked away. Then out popped his £200, so the next guy in line took it.

The bank gave him full refund though as a good will gesture, so I think it comes down to their decision.

I would have handed it into the bank, someone left £5 at one of the those self service checkouts at Tesco I handed it in. I've also walked off leaving the money in the cash machine, twice in fact one guy ran after me to give it to me. Was only £10 each time though.

I'm not the type of person to get beaten up, I can even beat 1v2 I'm not big, just good at what I do. At least till I'm 50 anyway.

    Anything further on this?

    This cheered me up! :-D
Incidentally, if someone does come up to an ATM and takes money from it that may be sticking out, then this is "Theft by Finding" and is treated in law the same as any other theft. So if you do take it, make sure CCTV doesn't catch you!
