    I've lost my disk drives!

I don't really know where to start but a few weeks ago I noticed that I couldn't find my disk drives on my pc (obviously I can see the physical evidence!). What could have happened to them and why can I not see them anymore?

I have a Drive A (floppy disk), a Drive C: Hard Disk, a Drive G: Hard Disk but Drive D and Drive E have gone from the menu altogether.

I'm not a techy person but what might I have done for this to happen?

Once I have this sorted I have a list of other problems so please bear with me!

Try a system restore. Go to accessories, system tools and click on system restore. No data is lost but you go back to a point in history when everything was working.

Thanks, I'm trying a system restore now but only seems to take me back to November and I rarely need the disk drives so I'm unsure when this started, could have been ages before then!

I'm gonna presume you're using Windows and I'm gonna guess these drives have IDE connections (the old type) rather than SATA.

If that's the case, you could try doing this...

Start Menu > Control Panel > System.

Click on the "Hardware" tab and then the "Device Manager" button.

You'll see a list of devices, find IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and click on the + sign to open up the list. Now you should see Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel.

Right-click on the Secondary IDE Channel and select Uninstall. OK the warning and reboot. When your PC comes back on you should see the "Found new hardware" message - cross your fingers and check to see if your drives are back. If not, repeat the process but this time uninstall the Primary IDE Channel.

This once happened to me. They were gone for a few weeks. Then as mysteriously as they disappeared, they reappeared!! Wish I could tell you why or what I did for them to appear again but its a mystery!!

    Which OS?

Are the drives showing in Disk Management (part of Computer Management in Administrative Tools)?

Right, the DVD/CD-ROM Devices both have yellow exclaimation marks by them and when you click on them it says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

OK, is that after you uninstalled the IDE channel/s?
This may be of some help: ]Code 39 Error Resolution.
Let me know how you get on.

If you need to get back to before uninstalling the IDE channels, a system restore point would have automatically been created.

Were you aware if the missing drives showed up in the device manager before uninstalling the IDE channels?

Yes they showed up before uninstalling the IDE channels but in the same manner, with the yellow exclamation mark through them. I feel a little more comfortable that I can see evidence of them at least but guess I need to uninstall and download new drivers!

As I said in my original post, I have a series of problems with my PC, this is just one of them but the other that bothers me is the fact that I can't seem to put a new USB in. When it says Found New Hardware, it then searches indefinitely until I tell it to cancel but not sure if the one thing relates to the other.

All I want to make sure I have is my digital photos and tried to use an external hard drive to load them onto yesterday but again, it just flashes indefinitely whilst the wizard searches.

Is it possible to download the drivers to the disk drives please? I can't find the Dell disks at the moment which is a bit frustrating and I guess I need to reinstall them.

Did it work - are your drives back?

    Original Poster

No! It came up with an error message which I didn't write down at the time. Have gone through the same procedure but it just asks me if I want to save the file, which I have but still can't see the drive there.

    google.co.uk/url…9Ug

    try reset dma.vbs

or download ImgBurn (actually do both) from mirror 8 download.imgburn.com/Set…exe you may have to right click save as

tools reset dma or if you used the reset.vbs then goto tools filter driver load order and copy to clipboard then paste into here what it says

I'm getting out of my depth here! I'm in the ImgBurn website, do I double click on Mirror 8? It then says I can "run" or "save" - but what from here (I'd already done the reset dma.vbs and rebooted)

right click and save as then once saved run/install it.

After running reset dma and letting all hard drives and Roms pick up again have you checked device manager to see if you still have a yellow exclamation mark on your rom drive ?

anyways after checking and if error persists install Imgburn

    Then says:

Check the components you wish to install:

    Start Menu Shortcuts
    Desktop Icon
    Quicklaunch Icon
    Install for all users
    Enable SPTI access for Users

    just install it
