Jail break an ipod touch...pros and cons and legality please?

    Hi
Many of my sons friends at school are jail breaking their ipod touches.
Up till now we have never done anything like this as it sounded very technical but apparently there is a website called jailbreakme which makes it easy. We have watched a video on you tube and it does look simple.
I am still apprehensive though. Can someone give us reasons not to jailbreak, possible problems that we would have etc in the future. I did wonder whether updates would be affected to the ipod.
As I understand it, it is even legal to jailbreak now or it definitely is in the States. Can someone confirm this is legal over here too.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

ive got a jailbroken one main benefit is being able to download the apps from the internet and install them but tbh i dont really bother with it anymore cause alot of the apps lately are based for the iphone and if i see a decent free app on itunes i cant get it because i've not got the latest firmware installed and if i was to update firmware it would mess up the jailbreak.
i'm not sure on the legality of it i think it may be legal to do the actual jailbreak but not the using of paid apps

    Themes, 3rd party apps, cydia.

I believe it's legal, although apple don't like it - so it does void your warranty ... But if you were to develop a fault and you need them to fix it then you could just do a restore and wipe it clean and back to factory.

The benefits are mainly free apps when it's an ipod touch but they are even better when it's an iPhone.

All apps become free and you can download 3rd party apps from Cydia.

Good point, sorry I forgot to mention that ... If you have an old touch you should be able to download 4.1 firmware and update to that

If you can't find out this information yourself though, I wouldn't recommend jailbreaking...

yeah mine is a old one think it may even be a gen 1,from what i can remember from few years ago when i did it,it was firmware 1.5 rings a bell lol
i might look into updating now though, tbh i've not really been bothered

Thanks everyone he came in earlier fed up saying he can't jail break because he has the latest update. Agree with voltro more googling needed. Hopefully I can put him off a few more weeks as I suspect it will end in tears. Probably mine Thanks.
