    Job Help

I'm being potentially offered an apprenticeship for a company, it is for 9-5 Monday to Friday, the pay is £95 per week, roughly £2.7 an hour, I'm 19, is this legal or not and any advice? I mean after travel I would barely be scrapping £40.

Not sure if it's legal or not but my god take it if this is what you want and you need a job.

£95 is the minimum weekly wage for an apprenticeship unless you work in agriculture.

Yes that is legal but only for the first year, once you have worked their one year you will be entitled to minimum wage for your age group. See here...

apprentices over age 19 and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship will not qualify for the national minimum wage.

You're not 'paid' for apprenticeships are you. it's just fees you get, a bit like EMA.

I wouldn't say it is what I want but I need a job the problem is financially I worse off on this than JSA which is totally stupid, It's just really bouncing on my mind, I will mostly likely take it but it grinds me that its low

I was in a similar situation to you around 4 years ago, got an apprenticeship on £85 a week which is really annoying when it’s so low like you say. I worked there for a year until I was entitled to national minimum wage and they kind of said they couldn't afford to keep me then!

However, about a week later I got a decent job on 16k which I never would have got without the experience from the Apprenticeship. So I think they are worth it in the long run even if you don’t see the benefits immediately.

The thing is I feel so guilty I'd be making less now, I want to be on a reasonable amount and be able to support my mum and dad buy them nice things give them rent etc, my grades aren't that bad I've got 10 gcse's and three a levels.

legal - it's an apprenticeship - you get screwed to the gods on them.

Apprenticeships are exempt from National Minimum Wage Acts as far as I know.

£2.70 an hour is disgraceful, i'd tell them to f off

especially since you are 19 and not 14, i was earning more than minimum wage when i was 17

I believe it is legal, but don't take my word for it.
I've been offered an apprenticeship, but the wage is £15K+ per annum, plus London Weighting.

I totally agree and I will be worse off than JSA but I will probably take it, I don't want to be unemployed nor do I want to earn £2 an hour bit I feel i might have to take it.
