John Lewis fitting service refused?!?!?

Hello

This morning I was supposed to receive and have a tumble dryer fitted on a shelf above the washing machine. they refuse to fit it because apparently they are not allowed to lift appliances above their waist height. is it something correct? nowhere in the website this has been mentioned. any experience about it? Thanks

Tbh that wouldnt surprise me. I've heard many times that companies don't allow heavy objects to be lifted above waist height. Health and safety
wel if it is heavy and gotta lift about waste, not exactly a small box, best getting refund for fitting and getting a few friends to lift it up for you
I lifted my tumbe drier on to the worktop in my garage without a problem and am hardly a strong bloke!

Yes but as an individual you accept the risks and are only likely to do this a few times in your life. Workers on the other hand if allowed by law would be doing this day in and day out and risk injury from repeating actions. Lifting above waist height is not recommended in general as it significantly increases risk of injury. It does not need to mention this on the website, they would expect that any unsafe job would be refused and the installer to visit and make an assessment.

It’s mentioned on the site although could be clearer.

You just need a set of steps or other raised platform to allow the dryer to ascend to the intended location safely while being lifted below the level 5 partner's (home delivery employee's) waist.

That’s not going to happen for a £20 install your looking at around half the cost of the dryer for that kind of specialist install which is H&S compliant.

Depends on the tumble drier, an old fashioned basic heating type is quite light where as a heat pump dryer is quite heavy and almost as heavy as a washing machine, OP doesn't state what type it was though.

I was suggesting the home owner arranges this in advance of the delivery representatives arriving

To be honest. When I request an installation service. Do you think I pay just to connect a plug on the wall considering is a tumble dryer with no hose to connect on the wall? Washing machines and tumble dryers are supposed to go one on top of the others. How do you think they go in that position? I tried to snap my fingers but didn't work
Can't you get a couple of unemployed Eastern European illegals to lift it for a bottle of anti freeze? Unless it's a vented drier it's then a case of plugging it in (don't need an electrician for that - yet).

On the day maybe, but such a big company not having the appropriate equipment for what must be a reasonably common install is a bit of a surprise. I guess they may be subcontracting it out and don't wish to restrict their choice of suppliers.

A delivery to me is a ‘door step drop off’ and a paid installation is delivery to the room of your choice, unpacking, removal of rubbish and connection (even if it’s just plugging it in).

Maybe you’d be better buying from a small local independent shopas you’d get a bit more of a ‘personal’ service and they may have lifted it up for you.

Delivery companies only really move from a to b. The installation option really is easy money as 90% of the time it’ll be plugging it in (everything) and maybe removing a travel screw and connecting up a few pipes etc (washing machines).

I had a dishwasher delivered and ao gave me an install for free as the better half had just had our daughter. I had already put in the waste pipe for it. So all they had to do was put in the clean water pipe. And because I had to take the side of the cupboard off to get a filter that was on the pipe to fit they said no we only have 15mins from when we get here to bring in the product/unpack/install/leave. So was left with a dishwasher in the middle of the kitchen until the baby went to sleep so I had the time to get everything done. Because I got it for free I couldn’t really complain but if I had paid for it to be done I wouldn’t of been to happy.

But with your install, you think your getting something and they always find a way to get out of it.

99.9% of people don't have appliances above waist height

It's pretty obvious why they wouldn't install it
