john lewis xbox

Hey folks looking for a bit of advice here. I bought an Xbox 360 from John Lewis 4 months ago and out of nowhere tonight it decides its gonna break.

Its not the 3 red lights fault its a disc drive failure so it will not read any disc.

Supposedly Microsoft are taking 6 - 7 weeks to fix and return faulty xboxes under warranty but this is a very long time to be without something i paid nearly 300 pounds for.

I was wondering if anyone knew where i stand with regards to John Lewis? Could i take it back there and ask for a replacement as i would expect any product that cost that much to last more than 4 months.

Im just really hacked off and it would really annoy me having to send it to Microsoft for more than half the time i have owned it.:x

Not having a good night at all.

they might get you to ring microsoft

You can take it back to John Lewis within the 1st year of purchase. They may try and fob you off but it's their responsablity to replace it. All the major chains like Game & Blockbuster just swap them straight away, they are used to them breaking after 5 mins.

They will just swap it around for another 1, if they don't agree call the manager he/she will by law they require to

ALSO

Microsoft not taking 6-7 weeks anymore the back log has finally cleard!

After a month they are not legally obliged to replace - only repair. You can insist they deal with MS rather than you but DIY will likely be faster.

Wouldnt recommend DIY (If you meant opening it up lol) Bad consequences with regards to voiding the warranty etc. It was probably worth it when the 360 came out as there was only a year warranty, but with Microsoft increasing that to 3 years, im not so sure if i would. But usually John Lewis should just replace it. Give a call to your local one and ask them, if they say they cant do anything do the old 'stroppy customer routine' lol

The ridiculous reliability problems are the only thing that has stopped me buying a 360. It's a running joke.

they wont replace it. i was in game and someone came into to say that there 360 just broke and the guy just said call microsoft. its ridiculous.

As i said before, the responsability IS with John Lewis. Do not be fobbed off or listen to the other comments.

XBOX 360's have an inherant fault at manufacture.

Game do replace it, they did we me and just because 1 store doesnt doesnt mean the other store wont

i know some people have been able to replace it. my freinds 360 broke and he just whent back to argos and they replaced it but he did have to speak to the manager.

John Lewis tend to have great customer service.

Phone your local branch and tell them it's knackered and could you have a replacement. Try not to take no for an answer. If they say yes take out the HDD and leave it at home then at the shop explain that the HDD has your Credit Card and personal details on it (white lie) and stick the drive off the new 360 in the old box.

That's what I did at Virgin as I wanted all my DLC and savegames.

thank you for all your comments.

I have been looking into the sale of goods act and it appears as mentioned in a few of the posts above my statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended) lie with the trader goods were purchased (John Lewis) from not the manufacturer. Also for goods 0-6 months it is assumed that the unit was faulty at the point of sale and the burden of proof lies with the retailer.

I think the action John lewis have to take is repair/replacement/partial/full refund - in that order. Although one interesting thing is it states a repair should be carried out within a reasonable time and should not cause the consumer any significant inconvenience. As microsoft is backed up at the moment and even if what qazim says is true it will still likely be no shorter than 4 weeks. As i have only owned it for 4 months when you look at it in terms that a quarter of the time i have owned it will have been spent in repair it seems fairly disproportionate for a device that cost £300.

So with reference to the above i think im going to push hard for a replacement as i do not think they can repair it in a reasonable timeframe.

I would like to thank all the people who responded. It has been quite interesting and i have learned a lot about what kind of rights a consumer actually has against faulty goods.

nah, I meant ring MS and send yourself.

well after a month of waiting for them to get it fixed i sent a letter to head office as the reasonable quoted time of 28 days had passed. I have just been into the shop today to collect my refund for the xbox and have purchased a version 2 175w version from currys. Hope i have better luck with this one. Thanks again for your help

nooooooo, not currys!

It will take more than a letter to HQ if it breaks this time. They have a team of people just to open all the complaints and file them in the bin.

really? i thought that as some people on this forum had good experiences with PC world being willing to swap faulty ones out without hassle as currys is part of the same parent company i didnt think there would be much problems.

I would be interested to know what your experience with currys is?

My 360 just died as well.

It was already a swap out for a faulty one from last year so the original warranty had ran out.

Just waiting now for Microsoft to send someone to pick it up, been 5 days so far.
