    Jump the Shark

Ok. I know what 'Jump the shark' means.

Without looking it up, how many people know what it means or has even heard of it? :giggle:

Me! And I hate it when it happens.

Nope never heard of it what does it mean?

Jumping the shark is a metaphor that was originally used to denote the tipping point at which a TV series is deemed to have passed its peak, or has introduced plot twists that are illogical in terms of everything that has preceded them. Once a show has "jumped the shark", fans sense a noticeable decline in quality or feel the show has undergone too many changes to retain its original charm. The term has also evolved to describe other areas of pop culture, including movie series, music, acting celebrities, or authors for whom a drastic change was seen as the beginning of the end. These changes are often attempts to attract their fans' waning attention with over-the-top statements or increasingly overt appeals to sex or violence. Some have broadened its use to simply describe any decline in appeal for the subject in question, without requiring a significant "jump the shark" moment as justification.

I disagree. IMHO family guy is a cheap knock-off of the Simpsons ;-)

I'd heard of it, it got banded about a lot last year in regards to BB7...most of the hardcore fans believe it Jumped the shark when they put Nikki back in!

It took me a long time to get into Family Guy but I generally prefer it. I despise American Dad though.

Shockingly my favourite of the big toons is now Southpark! I gave up watching it for a long time but seasons 9 and 10 have been outstanding.

The O.C. has been stoppped too recently i heard, shame i liked that too.

ok - so only 2 people answering the original question....
Thanks Donleeone for giving the game away!!!!
It refers back to an episode of 'Happy Days' where Fonzie goes water skiing, and literally jumps a shark! - as Donleeone states - a point in a series where it has strayed too far from its original theme - however Happy Days still went on to do another 100 or so episodes!
