try this - pdf manual - is it the car you mean? Found this on a rental car site.

"How to open to fuel filler cap?
Located under flap on rear offside. Lift the edge of the flap to open it, and use the ignition key to unlock it and twist off the cap anticlockwise."

Hope that helps.

Going by some other posts i have found it can be a right rugger.
Try:

put the key in and turn it half a turn to the left, and then remove key. Cap should screw off as you would imagine it to.

When you are finished, screw the cap back on until it clicks. Then lock with key to the right.

Should work.

Another thought have you relocked it when you had it off you did remove the key??? start again and turn the key with the cap in your hand to left to make sure its not locked and then retry fitting

yes thats the car and i put key in the cap turned it in anticlockwise direction and it just kept turning so then tried opposite way same thing happened then it suddently loosened but i dont know wot i did !lol problem now is cant get it to lock up again so petrol cap is unlocked !!! lol

I remember it being a pain. You like hold the cap and put pressure in one direction and then turn the key the opposite direction. To get it back on you put the key in and turn it, then put the cap on the tank and turn the opposite direction before releasing the key.

Bit like a child saftey pill bottle.

I also remember that awful Fiat build qualiry. Good luck with that

I had exactly the same problem with a Fiat Punto that I hired at Gatwick Airport. Got the cap off, but could not get it on again. Had to leave it to the hire people to put it back on. Why does Fiat make it so difficult!

As Alternate said, hold the cap as you turn the key. After a couple of goes it will become second nature & you won't understand why you had problems in the first place...

I had that problem with mine, stood at the petrol station for about 5 Minutes trying to get the bloody thing off. As others were saying put the ket in turn it anticlockwise (just the key) Then turn the whole cap and do the oposite to get it back on!

they do things differently in italy i guess ... hehehe

mstiny....Thinking about it, being female, you did well to locate the cap in the first place :whistling::-D

Is there any truth in the rumour that fiat punto's have twin exhausts?
.....so you can lift them up and barrow them home when they pack up! :w00t:

think i have it sussed now how to put petrol in the car !!!!lol think originally the problem was i am left handed and there is not a lot of room to hold the petrol cap at the same time turning the key but practice makes perfect ......not perfect yet but improving !!

well done mstiny !

Just spent 20 minutes figuring how to lock the filler cap on my Punto Pop had the owners manual out and everything still don't know how I locked it. I'm dreading filling up again!

My sons fiat panda has the basic twist lock fuel cap and it's broken. It seems the mechanism has broke and won't unscrew?
Other than smashing it to pieces does anybody know the trick to get it off?

had a similar problem with my old punto a few years ago might not be the same but i just had to play about with it so to speak sometimes took up to 5 mins to open/close it.

i must of looked like a complete tool every time i filled up X)
