Hook it up to a TV and set the output res as low as it will go, then try again.

i bought it today but it could be

Try to connect it and reset console. With ps3 it was holding the power button for couple of seconds so I reckon it'll be holding your finger on power touch button for some time. It should reset display settings and adjust to new video output. No harm in trying- it wouldn't reset any of your settings or anything else but display.

Turn off HDCP in the ps4 settings. Try the output as 720p HDCP off.

640x480 or 480i (i.e. NTSC)? An old monitor will accept the former but potentially not the latter.
