My dad wants this to do BASIC stuff...i.e. word process, email, internet.

Is there anything I should attempt to do to speed up this machine or upgarde it?

I haven't had a chance to have a look at it yet as I am waiting on a new power supply coming off ebay for it.

Thanks in advance.

Install XP if it isn't running it. My dad still has an old PII 333mhz running it smoothly - just don't load it up with too much ****! Old laptops FTW!

More RAM

I agree I had a PII toughbook 333mhz and 256 ram running XP smoothly enough (ok it wasnt as fast as it could be, but it never let me down), I just turned off all services it didnt need, it coped with paint well as well as office and firefox and general everyday stuff or you could install Tinyxp if you must have a windows OS, for this laptop i'd be tempted to give linux a really good trial though:-D It seems made for it!

Install linux on it and it'll run nice and smooth!!

Thanks for all the advice people. I am going to attempt to put XP on it firstly. He got it from someone else so I think Windows ME and aload of garbage might still be on it. Should I look at formatting the hard drive?

If its got ME on it it will be formatted to a fat system, for xp you want NTFS anyway the option to format will appear when installing:thumbsup:

Not sure of the hard drive size though so make sure its big enough for xp! (id recommend at least 8 gig as windows can easily occupy 4 gig!

If you are unsure about linux try one of the no-install live cd's it runs straight from the cd without the need to install it:thumbsup:

Make sure XP drivers are available before installing XP.

Laptops often need special drivers for video, sound and other components.

If XP drivers are not available you may find certain things dont work on it.

If it is an older laptop it may be that nobody ever bothered to write XP drivers for it.

You'll have to if you want to install XP.

How old is the laptop, what are it's specifications?
