Just had a new Car Key Cut And...

Was wondering if it needs to be coded? - not the fob the actual key..

I got a brand new un-cut key from ebay, the fob part works perfectly, so yesterday I went to a key cutting shop and they cut my blade. I tested it apon returning to my car, it open and locks all the doors (by putting the key in the lock and turning). When putting it in the ingintion it allows me to turn to the ON possition, however when i turn it to start the car nothing happends and the key symbol flashes on the dash.

Does this mean that the key needs to be coded?

-If this is the case, where can I get this done.. I dont really wanna goto the dealer as they rip you off, can this be done else where?

Its a Mazda 6 if this helps?

    Thanks,
    Mr.T

I,m not 100% sure but I think it's to do with the immobiliser. I think it does need to be programmed. You would need the code which is usually on a card it the handbook stuff or on a tag with the other keys (spare, although you obviously don't have that!). If it's an old car and you don't have that stuff then I don't know what to suggest.

what year & cc is it ? does the original key have a built in fob or do you have a seperate fob, sounds like all they have cut you is a standard key blade, which will allow you to open the doors & thats it.

hmmm I have the same problem with my Galaxy, thinking the dealer is the only way to go

The key will unlcok the doors etc but will not start the car

You need it coded to start the car

    Thanks for replys,

The key is one unit, however the key and the fob can separate like this:

doesnt matter - it still needs coded

at present the key is not sending a signal to the ignition to allow it to start

there's a guide here on how to re-program your key, but you'll need 2 that already work on your car, otherwise, it sounds like a dealer job. mazda3forums.com/ind…0.0

With Ford you can program them yourself with a certain sequence using the 'other' key. Mazda and Ford were heavily involved together so it may be the same.

I am guessing that you dont have another key though.............

ah cheers, i'll give this a go with my only working key lol. maybe i can instert it twice and then the new key. Thanks

I would have thought the chip is in the bit with the buttons so a new key part should work fine ?

'No it definitely won't work with only a single key, you need to have two as a security precaution, so your valet can't make a copy of your key while you are eating dinner or whatever.'

sometimes the remote is operated seperatly from the key & the chip is fitted in the lower halve (key blade section)

really? i'll have to look into this then, its a pain keeping 2 keys on my bunch (plus losing them or looking them in would be a nightmare, lol)

oh 2 keys needed, ok so it is a dealers job then :-(

all I've got is for a seperate remote for a mazda 6 2006.

Where did you get that software from richp? I have a Mazda 6 too, and it would be very useful.
