Just killed my good PC by part installing Win7 on the wrong HDD

I need to know if / how to boot to my previous OS on partition C rather than partition E on the same HDD. I'm thinking this may be really complicated but there is a chance its straightforward to type some string of DOS commands that will just redirect my boot back to XP.

I wanted to install Win7 on a 8Gb USB but the software wouldn't allow it, so I 'kneejerked' and went to install it onto my second slave IDE HDD but like a total prune chose the wrong drive (my current OS drive). When I realised I cancelled and the soft said it would return my PC to the way it was. Then came the bl00dy inevitable error..."unable to" return to as was. Now I get booted into a Win7 screen with DOS cmd...and thats all.

Althought I installed it onto the wrong drive I did install to a different partition on the drive (>>HDD1, C: has XP and now E: has a bit of Win7)

So to my Questions: Whats really bothering me is if this "custom" install would have done any damage to my files on C:...and if they are in the clear how can I return the boot to my old XP on C: rather than part installed Win 7 on E:?

If you have files you want to save i would install windows 7 on a seperate drive then try to recover files from your C drive by using it as a slave,

just reinstall win7 on your current os drive as you were. Then you will have dual boot options and boot to previous OS and format the win7 partition. And edit msconfig to remove dual boot option

    I think that will work

Ah dual boot - thats what i was trying to get in the first place by supposedly separating XP and Win7 to different HDDs (i could change boot sequence to chose what OS to run). I really dont want to over write XP as my good PC is right near min sys reqs for Win7 and I wouldnt trust this again to go to previous...i was only 27% through 'expanding windows files' (first stepish) and it couldnt go back to XP from that>>installing Win7 over XP sounds like a lot of future work if Win7 is a no go...uuurgghh its gonna be a bind

win7 and xp use completely different boot managers to remove the win7 boot manager you need something like vistabootpro

but you need to be able to boot a partition to run it

Aww crap, you know I'll probably have to end up getting a new HDD and reinstalling XP wont i?
Though I had a chance there with the 'boot manager' phrase...googled it but coming up blank.

I'm wondering if the repair option in XP would set it back to the main boot partition?

edit - I know it hasn't changed the XP installation :-).

Actually, now I've calmed down a bit I've realized I dont need to reinstall EVERYTHING again...I've a 10gb HDD I use for torrents...I can just install my xp disc...not bother with updates etc or reinstalling programs...it will give me a base to try a 'boot manager' (never knew such a thing existed) and see whAt i can do from there!

you miss my point. XP is still there! You started installing W7 to a seperate partition!

Just install win7 again to your E partition on the drive

then when you re-boot, it should detect XP is still there on there on the C drive and win7 on the E drive so you can choose what to boot.

Ah now i get ya buddy  I was a bit confused about formatting the Win7 (which i now think i dont need to do after reading your last) only one problem is that the pc boots to system32> cmd. I had a backflash to basic DOS and dir *: (all drives) and couldn't find my Win 7 (looking to run>path/setup.exe). So if I DL it again could i do 'something' to make a bootable CD that will continue my insallation from my current situation? Any recommended soft gladly accepted.
