if you get a chance watch a movie called "walmart-the high cost of low price"-that tells you a lot about how they operate. The stories of random sackings, slave labour etc are amazing. You know some walmart stores in america have shanty towns right beside them where their illegal immigrant workers live? or that the people who make george clothing are so poor they sleep on the floor of the factory, and are CHARGED for the privelege? it goes on and on-watch the film if you get the chance-its an eye opener.

Good film - I saw it for £2 in Asda the other day.

How do they keep prices so low?

    whats the big fuss?

It's like public services being forced into having so many ethnic minorities. It means people who can actually do the job are being discriminated against, which is meant to be the whole effort behind it, to stop descrimination :? The best people should get the job and if none of them are ethnics - who cares !

to an extent, they do get away with it here-as the op,or anyone who works for them will know, every colleague gets an asda handbook which the company like to quote at you at every turn. There is,however another handbook which is only for personell managers(which I have "acquired" cough) which lays out an entirely different attitude to staff. How to get rid of colleagues when you need to cost cut but have no legitimate reason to dismiss them? simple-look at your part time workers, pick the ones who can only work certain hours for childcare reasons or whatever and give them written notice of a change to their hours to the EXACT opposite that they can manage. act all devastated that they have to leave and call it "the needs of the business" to cover yourself for legal reasons.

in every page of the managers handbook colleagues are referred to as "assets" to be used or disposed of as the company sees fit-its an eye opener. asda are also the biggest users and instigators of "dead peasants insurance" in the world.

The company claimed it was necessary as all health and safety training … The company claimed it was necessary as all health and safety training was conducted in Polish.

Surely it must be law that any health and safety training given in the UK be given in English?

They used this to sack me as i fell pregnant with ds2 as my maternity leave from ds1 ended in the feb 2008 and ds2 was due in march 2008, they said it was in the interests of the company and myself if they laid me off, she said they would have a job for me but still gave me my P45.:x:x:x

Would you seriously be happy as an employer to hire a person who seemingly spends most of their time on maternity leave?

It's a competitive market where you have to offer a prospective (or current) employer something that someone else can't.

Now that's not really an answer.

But are you seriously saying that when you've hired people in the past, you haven't weighed up things that a tribunal might frown on?

The new secretary with the impressive décolletage might brighten the office?

The dried up divorcee isn't going to go down pregnant any time soon?

Aren't you someone that often bleats about discrimination? Just because you're never going to have a baby, isn't a reason to discriminate against those that will. Laws are made to protect and rightly so.

I had worked for them for 7 years prior and was never ill, never took a day off, with ds 1 worked right up until three days before he arrived so was a little disappointed, it was a blessing really as ive been lucky to be able to live on one wage as mortgage is quite reasonable and ive been able to spend all the time ive needed with the kids

I'm against discrimination, but I also recognise a company's right to safeguard it's ability to employ people in the future by making itself as streamlined and efficient in the here and now.

i've always thought padded cells were a cruel trick to play on someone.

If you were in a room lined with cushions, every fibre in your body would urge you to bounce from wall to wall.

One couldn't fail but appear mad.
