Just watched Formula 1 Grand Prix. What is this Curs system?

Just watched the Grand Prix and the commentators kept going on about this ting called Curs/Cers/Cares?

Is it some sort of energy boost for the cars. Never heard of it before just thought someone might enlighten me. Cheers.

Button might be worth a bet on winning the Championship too.

KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) - basically when the car brakes for a corner instead of kinetic energy of the car being coverted to heat some of it is used to charge up a battery (or flywheel) within the car. The driver can then choose to use this charged up power to boost the car with up to 80 additional horse power for around 6 seconds in total.

The difficulty in implementing the system is that it's a chunk of solid weight which means weight distribution is more difficult, in practice KERS equipped cars have been struggling to match a non-KERS car in lap times. However in race pace it seems to be working well on Hamilton's car as it means he can boost up the straights to overtake cars or boost to defend if it's been a slower corner.

Thanks for this. Was just curious as thought it was some sort of nitrous lol.

Cheers guys. Rep added for the help.

It's not entirely dissimilar in use to a nitrous system in actual use (although nothing like it mechanically) except with KERS the charge is being topped up each lap.

When they show the telemetry for a car with KERS you'll notice there's a battery symbol which lights up and depletes to show when the driver has engaged the system.

I'd recommend watching this superb video from Red Bull explaining the rule changes, around the middle it shows a visual representation of how KERS works:

Never heard of KERS, but when I read your description, I immediately thought of Nitrous!
