    Justice Secretary pardons Michael Shields

Liverpool fan Michael Shields has been pardoned by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

The 22-year-old, who is serving a 10-year sentence for the attempted murder of a Bulgarian barman, is set to leave prison later.

He was jailed in 2005 for the attack, which took place after his team's win in the 2005 Champions League final.

His parents, Michael Snr and Maria, have campaigned for his release since he was convicted.

    About bloody time !

About time too. Well done for his parents for never giving up campaigning about this.

    don't care

    Glad he's been vindicated.

Hopefully now he can piece back together the shreds of his life.

Some say "no smoke without fire".

Well who done it then...and does anyone care about the brain damaged Bulgarian guy???

And the probability of him being convicted of this crime!!! NONE

Still an innocent person shouldn't be convicted or punished for it.

Totally agree....but someone did it, and they should be punished.....
Still not sure how much involvment Michael Shields had in it tho...They dont arrest, convict and put someone in prison with no evidence or reason!

I remember reading up on the case months n months ago now. There was solid evidence he wasn't involved but the legal system being what it is especially when it involves a certain amount of multi-national issues, he wasn't being fairly treated.

My personal belief is that the protection of the innocent is far more important than punishing the guilty.

    Well said!

Great news for Michael and his family..........and yes, there are many people languishing in prisons who are not guilty of the crimes they have been convicted for.Sadly being convicted of a crime you didn't commit is far easier than appealing your innocence after the fact.

Ok...But not exactly Bulgaria is it!

Well, I hope he has learnt his lesson.

I wonder if he would have been remotely bothered if the shoe was on the other foot?

I watched a TV programme (and have read about this case in the papers and have seen news reports over the years) which clearly showed me that he was not involved in any way. The main piece of evidence was that he had a white T-Shirt which the police made him wear for an ID parade, which was faulty in a lot of other aspects as well. I didn't make notes but I was convinced of his innocence. The other guy had already confessed to the crime.
I am pleased that he has been released and I can only hope that he manages to reassemble his life. It is good that he has a supportive family.
Of course the family of the victim of the crime must be feeling devastated but that is the fault of their authorities not this young man.

I stand corrected... He was innocent then...

Well done for convincing me.. :whistling:

    About time too great news

Quote: In a statement, Mr Straw said that during the last meeting with the Shields family on 28 August "important new evidence came to light".

He was told about a visit by two members of the Shields family to the home of another man alleged to be responsible for the crime.

He said: "I was told that in the course of the visit that man made an oral confession to the crime in front of several other people.

"When looked at alongside all the previously available evidence, (it) has now satisfied me that Mr Shields meets the high test set by the court."

So, his cousins and a few mates turn up with baseball bats and get a "confession" out of Graham Sankey. Justice prevails. Proof that the UK is complicit in torture....

Graham Sankey gave a written confession of the attack over four years ago :?

Did he not retract that statement after it did not work at the appeal??

To be honest, I am not that bothered, he was due for release in a couple of months anyway, and lets not forget, he has had a pardon. In no way does the pardon mean he is innocent, he is still guilty in law.

I just hope he does not milk it, you know the stuff.. Coming out at half time at anfield and all that sort of crap.

I actually feel for Martin Georgiev and his family at this time.

Graham Sankey gave a written confession of the attack over four years ago … Graham Sankey gave a written confession of the attack over four years ago :?

He gave a written confession of an attack yes, the problem with the confession was that it did not fit with how the attack against Georgiev was carried out and how it was described by the 'many witness's', the majority of which picked out Shields in an ID parade.

Sankey....."I panicked and stupidly picked up a brick and threw it in the direction of the men running towards me. I saw the brick hit one of them. I panicked and I turned and ran away and returned to the hotel".

The injuries Georgiev received wouldn't have been sustained by an attack of that nature. The prosecution witnesses saw a man, whom they believed was Shields, smash a paving slab on Mr Georgiev's head. Even if they had mistakenly identified Shields, Sankey's version was not in keeping with their accounts.
