Found 19th Feb 2009
I drive a vauxhall astra and it is quite old now. It has just started having a problem. The car starts fine but when I get down the road the kangaroo juice kicks in, then after that it drives fine. Has anyone any ideas on the problem. Thank you

Head gasket?
If it is is this is it an expensive job?
have you changed your fuel?
We found Esso did that to our old car
No I usually use Shell or Morrisons

I also have an astra and cost around £100 to fix mine when it went, it is basically a rubber seal in your engine that has worn/split and water mixed with the oil.

When mine went though it was 'kangarooing' then smoke was eventually coming from under bonnet so may not be whats wrong with yours.
Could be loads of things. First thing I'd check (depends on how old your car is) is whether or not there is any water/moisture in your distributor cap etc - check your plugs and points first!

Get a can of WD40 and spray it on them - see if that works.

Thanks I will try that I will have to wait until the morning as I have been out in the car today. It only kangaroos the first time I use it.

I have had a head gasket fail on me before but this is not as bad as that.
my car continuously kangaroo jumping even when at 50mph. it likes to be in low gears driving fast. hates 4th or 5th gear and jumps bad. also smell burning petrol. lol
could be 1001 things bad fuel - blocked jets
best to take it to a garage to for a free quote
When was it last serviced ?,The first thing to check is always plugs and leads,
It was serviced nearly two years ago but tbh I don't do that much mileage around 4,000 a year at the most.

I have sprayed on WD40 and see what its like in the morning. I think I'll take it to the garage if that doesn't help.
kangaroo juice? why not dog juice

It could be one of a hundred things, nobody is going to be able to diagnose the fault on here I'm afraid.

That was cheap you sure it was the head gasket? I got quoted £450 excluding the parts
Could be a load of things TBH - I would suggest a possible blockage in the fuel line or filter or possibly air getting into the system somewhere - or poss intake valve at the carbuettor sticking. Blocked injectors ect......hmm could be loads.

You could try a dose of REDEX through the system to try to 'clean' it out but ultimately I think it is a garage job...

sorry
Having sprayed the car with WD40 no more problems. Just drove to Whitby no problems at all. Thanks everyone
