Katie our baby hasn't done a poo since 5pm yesterday

    Hey guys

Just as the title says, do we start worrying she may be constipated or give it a little longer?
She has been on hungry baby aptimal for around 2 weeks and everything was fine until now, do u think we should go back to aptimal 1?

Anything we can use just now if it is constipation to break stuff down so she does poo?

    Thanks all

Why not ring NHS direct instead of a shopping forum? Or do you trust the anonymous posters on a deals site more than a doctor?

Seriously.... give them a call and put your mind at rest and get the correct treatment needed.

Not a flame BTW (even if it sounds like one!).... it is genuine advice!

I wouldnt' be worried, if she's otherwise well. It's not even been 24 hours. But, like said previously, if you're worried, ring the NHS people, or your health visitor.

i think she should be ok at the moment, how old is she? my daughter use to go a day without a poo. it might be her body adjusting to the new milk.

Can you contact your health visitor?

I remember this well, worrying when my little boy was a baby.
To be honest I rang the NHS direct number or the hospital number they give you in your discharge pack (can't remember now) and they put my mind at rest.
Nothing beats the reassurance from a professional

We don't want to contact our HV as the whole lot of them FROWN upon using Hungry baby formula "it's the work of the devil" they say

    she is a month old

I generally ask questions on here before I go in a panic and call NHS, usually u get really good advice on here that's why I'm asking on here first, plus it's good knowledge to have this sort of stuff on the forum, just for anyone else with the same problem

apricot baby dinner used to work on dd - she was on meds for 1st 2 years which made her really constipated - apricots did the trick most of the time - its for baby though - not for you

see health worker in clinic tomorrow:thumbsup:

hi, you shouldnt need to worry,i had exactly the same trouble with my lil boy. he is on aptimil aswell. he is combine fed and he went 5 days without going to the toilet. i was worry at first so spoke to HV and she explained that it is perfectly acceptable for them to go that long. i think she said if they havent been for 10 days then see the doctor. we were also advised to give him 1 small spoon of pure orange to 4 spoons cooled boiled water... didnt take long to work at all
    hope this helps

They said it was fine for the baby not to have a poo every day and only to worry if the baby looked in pain or hadn't gone for a week!!

Its all a worry isn't it - I promise you will laugh at this one day, worrying about poo patterns :-D

Yeh I just gave her 3half oz of cooled boiled water and she is now sleeping in her cot again. She seems fine and ok but it's when we see her squeezing, I ask myself is she trying to do a poo and can't lol I may be over reacting

thanks for all the adice guys, appreciate it at this time of morning haha

Health visitors only work 9-5, no weekends. My kids often went 8 days when they were babies, very common in babies who are breastfed as there is less waste product. Did not seem right at the time but they were happy and smiling so I knew they were not ill.

Saxo that is appalling, if you feel you cannot contact your health visitor because of their personal opinions I would seriously think about changing or having a word with someone higher up, they are there to support and guide everyone in their care regardless of that persons choice of feeding. Anyway rant over and back to subject, as said previously as long as she does not appear to be in pain then she will be fine. I'm sure you can get baby prune juice that you dilute but I would personally not give her anything unless the information is supported by a health professional. Good luck

My LO was the same when we switched to hungrier baby milk, and like you the health visitor advised us not to use it and so we switched back to the regular one and she started pooing again daily so we stuck with ordinary baby milk and all is back to how it was.

I had my baby on the hungry baby formula . it did the same to her. My health visitor told me to give her a little prune juice or diluted fresh orange . just a tiny little bit .

Less than 24 hours - no need to worry at all. Stop panicking, the baby is fine!

    Since 5pm last night?
    Whats the problem?

When my LO became like this i was advise to put vaseline on his bum as if he was constipated this would make it easier to go and if you really not squirmish to massage very gently in small circles right where the poo would come from.
But ever since them until he was 18 months i always used vaseline after eery nappy change and he never had bad nappy rash. Just sore at times of teething, then id use something a lil stronger like bepanthen once and back to vaseline then.

Try rubbing her tummy in a circular anti clockwise motion very gently, my hv showed me this, I know a lot of health professionals don't agree on the use of hungry baby formula, it doesn't have any more nutritional value and it stays in the tummy longer making the baby feel fuller, mine had to see a consultant neonatal specialist and a consultant paediatrition when she was 8 weeks old for the possibility of prematurely fused sutures, they both said that the hungry baby formula can cause problems, if your hv isn't very helpful, I'd suggest making an appt with your GP to discuss the formula further, but in the meantime give NHS direct a call for peace of mind, or you could try the ward your partner was on after the lo was born, in my area for 6 weeks after if you have any concerns, you are allowed to ring the ward and speak to a mw for advice, I know it can be really worrying when they are so small, I'm an RGN and I still worry and panic over mine!

    Hi Saxo,

As above mat, if your worried, ring the NHS helpline.

ps - congrats on the baby

+1, geez let the kid breath!

+I'd move Health Visitors too, if they are shirty over you using baby formula.

Most of the health visitors Ive met, haven't got kids of their own. but like most things, there are good and bad.

I had to wait 10 days for mine, before the GP would prescribe anything.

I haven't done a poo since 5pm yesterday lol are babies meant to go every few hours?!

hungry baby milk isnt something to be given to babies straight away, it is harder for them to digest and lays heavily. so your health visitor is right in what they say, mine where both bottle fed and both had water between feeds, as for te constipation i wouldnt worry to much unless she is screaming in pain
