Keeping Conkers - Anyone got a tried and tested method of stopping them going off?

Kids have been collecting conkers, but some are already going moldy on the window ledge. Anyone have a tried and tested method of preservation? I'd like to keep a big bowl of them, but not green and moldy, just brown and gorgeous! I'm wondering about baking them... anyone done it themselves?

leave them in a jar of vinegar

yeah, buy a jar of pickles, eat the pickles, pounce on the missus and breathe all over her, and keep the conkers in the jar with the vinegar.

Either soak in warm vinegar or bake in a low temperature oven and finally coat with a layer of matt varnish.

Fab - thanks chaps. They're in the oven now - just hope they don't explode!

When i was younger we tried baking some conkers.

Put them in the oven, forgot about them, they exploded.

You should not be trying to bake them, but to remove the moisture from them. Therefore they should be on a very very low setting for a long time.

Yeah. This was about 10 years ago.

I might try and get some conkers now.. See if that spider thing works.

Cool. Will have to find some conkers now then...

Had some right beasts in the house this year already.

We had one in our Garden, just used to clean them off, put them in a airtight box and they used to last for ages. No point though as you get better ones the following year.

When I was a kid we put them in the hot water cylinder cupboard, worked a treat to dry them out and make them hard for games of conkers

Do kids still play conkers btw?
