Key Rail smartcard question

I've registered for a Key smartcard with the intent of using it as an easy way of getting weekly tickets without queuing but as I ordered a ticket, after choosing the start date it asked me when I want to collect it. Doesn't that defeat the whole point of using a smart card?

The FAQs confuse things further saying I can just tap my card when I get there.

Can anyone who has a smartcard clarify this for me. Is it just a case that my card won't technically have the season ticket loaded until it's first used at the gate at the station? For something that should be about simplifying tickets, the information they give is pretty confusing.
