Seriously though, 1st Birthday really just get him something small, he doesn't know at this age and you maybe could get him something when he really needs it instead. x

I'd go with that. Get him something that you know he's going to need - more clothes or something and maybe a small toy.

buy a smaller gift then spend the rest of the money on a nice family day out.

Totally agree. And often you forget that he will get presents off other people too.

or should that be moneytree seedling

What about a swing? You can have a baby seat now and change to an older childs seat in years to come

Or one of those tricycles that have a handle that you push them along in. The handle can then be removed so it can be used as a normal tricycle

    Pop up tent and tunnel

Get yourself down to your local Early Learning Centre, they have some excellent and cheap toys and if you register your child with their birthday club you get a 20% discount voucher and a free childrens songs CD.

What about an annual pass to your local farm?

especially after these school holidays

His first bank account with £10 in it or whatever you would have spent.
Also tell friends and family so they can add to it if they want to.
My daughter now has over £400 savings at the age of 4 because we did this. Enough for her first car when she's 18 probably.

jus have a nice lil day out. spoil him rotten.....thats all he will notice!! wont understand the pressies!

What did you get for your 1st birthday? Exactly - no-one remembers, so don't worry about getting him something that he's going to remember! Just get him something that you know he will like, it only needs to be a small treat.

Dont feel pressured by other people saying "oh what you getting him" - I just told them straight that he is too young for expensive gifts and prefers playing with a wooden spoon and bowl.He will no doubt be expecting more expensive gifts the older he gets.Another idea is too put some money into an account for him or top up his trust fund.x

    i agree

the envelopes his cards came in will be more exiting than expensive toys

thanks 4 all ur ideas ..... takes bit ov pressure off knowing that we dont have to go mad... feels like we do though cos its his 1st bday .?? confused

Nah dont worry about it Moneytree, the best bit of our lads first birthday was watching him rip open all the prezzies and then ignore the contents of the boxes completeley.

For his second, coming up in October we've converted our dining room into a play room for him.

mite take him to seaside. wiv a brolley

They tend to get a bit overwhelmed anyway when they're one so best not to buy him too much. I know you said you're on a bit of a budget but didn't say what that budget was. If you want to buy him a toy that will last for years and he'll get loads of use out of, buy him a wheelybug, they cost around £40 but are fantastic and come in 2 sizes and about 5 different animals. They are made from wood and leather and my daughters each got one when they were 10months and 4½ yrs old (different sizes) and have never stopped playing with them, loads of friends have now gone out and bought one and they are really hard wearing, they must be as my 17½stone husband has been on the bigger one. Totally worth the money, check them out here,

they are so funny . mite be a gud idea.. wooden toys last way longer than plastic.. i have bought the big ninky nonk from in the night garden as it is made from real wood and the plastic one just didnt compare......

I was stuck for my LO's first birthday as she has an older brother that has everything!!! I bought a little tikes kitchen for her and she loves it and will grow into it more as she gets older. I bought it to replace the 2nd hand one I had bought for my son a few years ago. Think of stuff they will use for many years. Such as outside toys like bikes or climbing frames which will grow with them.
For my son I bought him some wooden blocks in a pull along tray. He still loves them at 3 1/2 and plays with his sister for hours with them

Forgot to mention that they "bugs" are now 3 years old and show no sign of wear and tear at all. They do only use them inside and are best on wooden floors as they absolutely fly but are SO much fun - yes I've been on them too!! Perhaps if your LO is an only child you ought to buy one for yourself while you're at it!!

go to a car boot sale and give the toys a good scrub.

Good idea but there is a MINIMUM spend of £100, (showing my age but I still have a £1 premium bond I was bought for a birthday.

Are Children's Bonus Bonds the same as Premium Bonds? (sorry to be numb!) I was given a £5 Premium Bond when I was a baby! - How times change!

We bought our eldest a soft rug shaped like a cow with a 'lumpy' head and long tail! (Sounds awful!) She loved it - used to snuggle on it for nap times and watching TV - called it Moo Moo!

Bought our youngest a Transporter truck which held 2 cars..... the truck used to get sat on like a bike! Cars ended up in the sandpit....

Like others have already said, relatives and friends will buy plenty of stuff so save yourself some stress and money - not to mention some room in your house!

A big cardboard box is always a winner!

(PS - My eldest is 10 next month and my youngest turned 8 two weeks ago!)

Have fun and enjoy the day. Write down what you do somewhere safe - children love reading about themselves as babies when they're "bigger"!
