I was wondering if anyone had ever tried cutting these shelves. I thought it would be ok to trim them each end but when they arrived I realised that they are a bit oddly constructed. Maybe this is normal for a 'floating' shelf!
They consist of pressed wood chips into a veneer shell.
My query is - if I try to cut them will the insides collapse?
Thanks.

Thanks for that.
I have scoured the posts on 'Lack' and can not find anyone that cut theirs!
They've fixed legs on them, made beds, tables and entertainment units out of them...but no one seemed to actually cut them.
An interesting site though.

If these are the floating shelves, I have one, and I would not advise cutting one.

i have the floating shelves- dont try cutting as this will "shatter" the wood as its not solid oak.

I think that you can return them to IKEA can't you?

Why is it described as floating? I cant imagine wot it looks like.

Because you can't see the brackets.

I live no where near an Ikea. I had to pay £35 *gasp* for home delivery.

5.2 To arrange collection of the unwanted goods please contact IKEA Shop Online! by Contact Us or by visiting Customer Services at www.ikea.co.uk. Alternatively you can speak to an IKEA Shop Online! Advisor on 0845 358 3363. Please have your order number and delivery receipt to hand. We will then arrange for your unwanted goods to be collected by an IKEA representative. A collection fee may apply.

I dread to think what they'd charge.

Ah well, maybe I can use them somewhere else.

I think you should be o.k cutting them they are surprisingly rigid when you do.
I haven't cut the shelves but I have cut the end off one of their mix and match table tops, the ones where you buy the top and legs separately.I have even drilled large holes in them at the corners to fit plugs through!
they are made from a wooden honeycomb material which stays in place when cut.
I used a circular saw though not too sure about hand saw.
I would say go for it but I take no responsibility!!

Hmmm, now you have me tempted to cut one. It might be worth a chance.
Thanks for the info.

South Coast.

Croydon is the closest Ikea, about 45 miles away I guess.

Had a look at that, the laptop desk from a stool was nice.

Thanks to you all for your advice. I rearranged the furniture and made room for the shelves and they look fantastic!
