    Laptop anti-theft software

I just got a laptop and want to install some kind of software which might help me to track it down if it gets stolen. Can anyone recommend something, free preferably..?

its £40 but it includes a license for 3 PCs, 1 netbook, a mac and LOJACK for a laptop.
if you got any friends or family that need a security, ask them to kick in. downside is that all licenses have to be registered to the same email.

Thanks, will check it out! Don't need a fully fledged security suite, just some small app which won't grab the attention of any thief

Looks awesome, just what i was after! thanks!

If you put a password on the BIOS then this will make it difficult for any thief to access your laptop.

You will have to put the password in each time you start up the laptop, and if you forget it it cannot easily be reset.

I had this feature on an IBM laptop but not sure it is available on all laptops.

I have been thinking about using a Global Positioning System Pet tracking device (like the microchips that can be inserted just under the skin of a dog or cat) & attaching one inside the laptop case.Should your laptop be stolen you can then ring the dedicated line (or use the web site facility) to track the computer without it being powered-up or even connected to the Internet at all.

The rest of that thread may offer some alternate suggestions for you.

It can be quite easily be reset in most cases actually

previous experience with laptops being lstolen and locked down is that the thieves mostly just smash'em up and are useless, if they are somewhat usable they sell them on quick and can be more often than not retrieved in a good state.

Used one on a bunch of Macbooks before. We just created a guest account for this purpose.
