Laptop Battery, how long should one last?

Had a Dell laptop for just over 10 months, noticed that the battery is now lasting less than 2 hours as opposed to the 4 it was lasting when I bought it. Laptop is used for uni, so does spend a considerable amount of time on battery power. I appreciate a laptop battery only has so many cycles, but I checked my daughters 2 year old Toshiba (which is used out and about a lot) and windows states that it's still holding 100% charge.

Spoke to Dell cs who had me run a couple of tests, update the bios then say that it's a consumable and tough, but surely it should last more than 10 month?

    Windows stating:

    DESIGN CAPACITY 41,440 mWh

    FULL CHARGE CAPACITY 20,350 mWh

Dell power manager puts it to sleep at 7% and its charged from there. It's normally used 2 or so hours 3 or 4 days a week on battery.

Should definitely last a lot longer than 10 months at that usage. I'd ring them again and try getting them to send one out for free. An official one may cost abit if you go buy one

£40, CS offered me one for £33. I'll try again, thought that it shouldn't of decreased that much in this amount of time.

New programs can also have an impact, as can updates to existing programs, an update I had back in March HALVED my battery life, until I went through and reset all the various battery saver options.

Having said that, if tweaking settings doesnt help, it could well be the battery; I have a 10 year old Asus where the battery is still good for 50% of the original play time spec.

When I run on battery I run it in battery saver mode, which reduces background activity and also dims the screen. The windows battery report tells me the battery is only holding 50% of it's original charge, dell power management is advising me to consider replacing my battery.
After the black Friday debacle and this I'd find it really hard to recommend dell (as much as I like my laptop).

Please remember guys that laptop batteries are consumables and aren't covered by the manufacturers warranty. I get asked this question so frequently that if I had a pound for the number of times I've been asked this over the 20 year period of running my I.T. hardware company I could of retired already

I'm aware it's a consumable, however it should still last a significant amount of time; which this hasn't.

Have you tried re-calibrating the battery using one of the software … Have you tried re-calibrating the battery using one of the software programs advertised for this?? Sometimes it is a fault that develops in the firmware that a recalibration can fix.Always worth trying something cheap/free before forking out for something expensive.I'm aware it's a consumable, however it should still last a significant amount of time; which this hasn't.

Yeah, you've probably got something wrong there.

Waiting until it's flat to charge won't do lithium-ion batteries any favours (they last longest when kept at mid-capacity) but you're not charging multiple times a day and it doesn't sound like you're getting it very hot which would be the other factors that would cause faster battery degradation.

    Apple would replace the laptop.......

My Lenovo battery lasted a little over 11 months, Pc World said it was a peripheral item (how ever its spelt lol) and wouldn't be able to claim. I asked to speak to a manager as I wasn't happy... He rang Lenovo and they said I'd have a new battery within 14 days.
I gave them my old battery and used the laptop via power lead only until it arrived.

I was charging my battery letting it run right down then charging, I didn't even have it plugged in all the time. My other laptop battery have lasted years but guess I just got a duff one.

Just an update. I emailed the CEO of Dell and heard nothing back for almost 2 weeks. Just got an email today asking for my postal address as they will send a new one out.
