Laptop blue screen of death now nothing :-(

    Banned
Last night the blue screen with all the writing came on and turned computer off, then turned back on and 5 minutes later it did it again, when turned back on it did some kind of CHSDISK (something like that) when finished it said something like all disk changed or errors done and restarted, after 5 minutes on HUKD IE just went completely balnk, like a cream colour so closed page and there was nothing on desktop, apart from desktop picture it was completely empty, no mouse, icones, nothing. Turned off and back on and now nothing, on start up fan comes on (like normal) and after quick flash of screen goes to a black screen, i can get into BIOS and into safe mode. but wehen clicked to go into safe mode it goes to black screen with 5 lines of white writing. somebody please tell me what to do :-( :-(

What type of laptop is it?

I had the same problem with my dell laptop, called up dell and they talked me through all sorts of stuff to try, didnt work and I ended up having to revert to factory settings - meaning I lost everything

If not a dell (as they dont do dell) I would take it to a PC world and ask them to take a look at it

Thanks kelly, its a medion and we dont have a pcworld that i can get too:-( and to be honest from what i have heard about them they are pretty useless. me not having much look with computers:-(

if you have your windows installation disk, try booting that up to see if your screen works with that, alternatively try a Linux boot cd.

If the CD boots and the screen displays the image then you have a problem with your windows install and will have to reinstall your operating system.

    Hope this helps

right i am at section on this michaelstevenstech.com/XPr…htm

Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair. If Repair is not one of the options, END setup. After the reboot read Warning#2!

i dont know what im supposed to press here, if possible i dont want to lose everythig, if i have to so be it

    Original Poster Banned

might as well ignore that bit as i did not do the warnings bit, so i take it i need to just reinstall now and lose everything. do i need to create or delete a partion?

I'm not sure what point you're up to:thinking:

Are you saying that you didn't have 'Repair' as an option so you've stopped, or have you not yet got that far?

If you are at a point where you have no other option but to re-install Windows then do so BUT DO NOT create or delete a partion. What will happen then is that Wndows will be re-installed over the top of the previous version. You will lose your various settings (e.g. desktop wallpaper, shortcuts on your desktop) but all your programs & data will still be there & still be accessible.

have had to do a complete reformat in reinstall, now when i press my wireless button nothing happens, could anyone tell me what i am looking for? is it the PCI modem as that and a few others have a yellow question mark:oops:

Yellow question mark's Sassie, are to do, as you already know with components that aren't working. Normally caused by driver issues. So, for those that aren't working, do you have any cd's that came with them? If so, install as many of them as you have, and that will clear a few. The rest, you might have to download from manufacturer's site or other places on the net. See how you get on with install cd's 1st

right all the above i installed drivers but the one below had a problem. so im assuming this is my problem

network controller = intel (R) pro/wireless 2200BG network connection(there was a problem installing this hardware, an error occured during the installation of this device. The parameter is incorrect

I have written these on here in the hope if i have done wrong i can go back

As mentioned in the PM - these are because the drivers for the devices havent been found and installed. As Boydent said, if you have the install discs for the machine, they will be on those. Failing that, on "D" drive, can you look at what it contains? It may be a single file with an extention .iso

Let me know what it is and says. It maybe all the drivers are actually located in the partition. But like anything, its difficult when things are not in front to see first hand!

You mention PCI modem? Im assuming you connect on broadband? If yes, how do you connect cable wise? Is it from a network port to a modem/hub? Or is it wireless?

Can you post what items that have the yellow exclamation mark.

Yes, that is your wireless network connection, so without that, you wont connect to your hub.

See my reply above.... and check. Be back in a mo....

    OK.

Have a look at ]this link:

There is a link a short way down that says its to identify the actual chipset you have on your wireless network card. Run that. Then download the driver (link on same page) for the corresponding device that was identified.

I assume you have a USB flash card - or something you can transfer the file over on?

    Good stuff. Nearly there!

OK, you have a wireless network, which you need to tell this machine how to access it.

Firstly, you need to tell it the method of encryption and enter the key.

Im assuming you know those details? If not - have a look at the machine you are using. The details will be on that if you are also using wireless!

Well luckily you got the driver installed, so don't matter now! But I recommend you get yourself one. They are a must!!!!!

Your connection now, is just a matter of knowing your connection details to your ISP and the hub you connect to.

Firstly, how do you connect the working machine to the internet?

Secondly, what is your ISP? What is the modem name that is plugged into your phone line? You will be able to access this, by typing an IP - but need to know the model first. Though try 192.168.1.250 (in a web browser - almost forget to tell you that!)

    Yes thats the thing!!!!

does it have a network connector on it so you can hard wire for now? Will make things easier if you have. Then once connected, the encryption keys will be seen and you can set up your wireless on the laptop.

Encryption keys can be numbers or letters - usually both! However, now youve said the desktop is hard wired, it wont have encryption keys (which are used to encyrpt the signal)

Have you typed in those IP addresses from the desktop yet? It may not be those that access, but its quite likely!
