Laptop Broken Methinks - Any Advice?

    Hi guys & girls.
My other laptop froze before so i restarted it and now it doesnt seem to do anything.
The dell screen with the loading bar comes up, then just a blank screen.
Also it might just be me being paranoid but im pretty sure i smelt a burning/overheating smell when using it a few hours ago.
Anybody have any advice, or something i can try?
    Appreciate any help.
    Thanks

Hit tab when the dell screen comes up and see if you get any error messages there.

If it gets past the dell screen (i.e. it stays on it for the normal amount of time before disappearing) then it's probably the operating system that's gone belly up rather than the hardware, you could try a Linux Live CD such as the Ubuntu one and see if that works.

    Three words. Ultimate boot cd

Sometimes the hard drive has moved. and just unscrewing the cover and making sure it's pushed in correctly works

i left it on after the dell screen for a while, now it says at the top of the screen:

    Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)
    NTLDR: Couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

    any ideas?

same here and I work with the darn things

What the error is telling you is that the Bios cannot find the primary partition root drive. Now seeing as your lappy will only have one boot drive (one hdd in it) it sounds as if one of two thing has happened. 1st one is that the drive has gone completely titts up, which id be led to believe.2nd one is that for some reason the primary drive has become corrupt and the Bios cannot find the boot loader, which means a fresh install of windows.

1st thing is to go into the Bios and see if its recognising the hdd at all. If not then its pretty much option 1. If the hdd is present in the Bios then its option 2.

Either way a HDD fault ;-)

PS regarding the cnet forums thats more towards a desktop based pc where you can either have primary and secondary master and slave drives set via a jumper, so not really valid for a laptop.

i would say 9 times out of 10 i see this error. A new hard drive is in order.

The BIOS (stands for Basic Input/Output System) is system software inside … The BIOS (stands for Basic Input/Output System) is system software inside your computer that helps the computer start up, even before Windows does. It also contains key settings about what the computer has on board. In newer computers, it exists on a special chip called CMOS (stands for Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor). You can go into the BIOS to edit or change the technical information about key components of the computer like disk drives, keyboards, and display settings. It also keeps track of the date and time. The BIOS can normally be accessed when you start your computer. You may see a reference to "Setup" when you turn your computer on. That’s your opportunity to get into the BIOS. It usually requires the push of a function key, such as F10, to get access to it. That "F" key varies between computers. Sometimes it’s not even one of the Function keys, but the ESC key or DEL key.

ive just reset and now it says:

internal hard disk drive not found.
To resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive.

No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility.
Press F5 to run onboard diagnostics.

Lol what should i do? me = retard

thanks alot for your help so far choc
    same goes to everyone else.
    appreciate it

Thanx choc, on Dells i think its f10... but maybe wrong coz i havent worked on one in a while.

M8 you could try undoing the screws that hold the hdd in place and reseating... but tbh if its never been moved id say your clutching at straws. To me it equals time for new drive.

BUT try to reseat first coz you may get lucky ;-)

yeah ive got it all on an external at my dads, but until i go over there ive got no music!

Depends on what size you wanna spend out on ? What size was in there before it broke ? Its up to you really - second hand ones in the HUKD for sale section will be cheaper, or new one depends on what size youre after.

PHEW at least its backed up. You dont know how many clients i get that havent backed up in years - then the shiyte hits the fan and they loose everything :-/ GOOD BOY LOL !!

lol well theres one happy thing to take from all this!
    really p**sed me off tho!
will get it sorted 1 way or another,
thanks everyone for your help it means alot.
i will rep you all when im less preoccupied!
    thanks

PS forgot to ask m8... how old is this laptop ?

    Original Poster

its a dell inspiron 1525, have had it for just under a year, got from delloutlet

Well you could always try the warranty route. If its under a year it should still be covered. If not from Dell then at least by the manifacturer (Hitachi, Samsung, WD).

May take a bit longer but that would be my first port of call - also cheaper ;-)

Get on the blower first thing in morning !

EDIT: just checked and outlet has same warranty as normal Dell, so a year i take it !

Its also worth noting that if you got your own hdd then youd have to reinstall Windows, where as if you got Dell to do it they would set it all back up for you ;-)

To determine whether it's the hard drive try running a liveCD (or ]Live USB stick if that's easier for you) and accessing the hard drive. If you've got multiple partitions on the drive (they show up as multiple drive letters C,D,E etc. in windows) and you can see your files on any then the hard drive is fine and either windows is broken or the hard drive configuration is scrambled and it's just a case of resetting that and reinstalling windows (you should be able to do both in the Windows setup, but backup from the LiveCD first). If you can't access any of them then a broken hard drive is more likely.
