    Laptop Buying Advice - Processors

    Hi all,

I'm hoping to purchase a new laptop this week and have found the model that I would like but there are two variations of it and I am unsure which would be the better option.

Originally I was thinking of purchasing the one with a Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 / 2.26 GHz ( Dual-Core ) processor but now another model has been released with a Intel Centrino Processor Technology T6400 (2.00GHz) and also an additional GB of ram taking it to 4GB though I understand that this is pointless with 32-bit Vista as it only detects 3GB.

Basically I would like to know the pros and cons for each processor and if there will be much of a difference noticeable when using it. I know a bit about computers but only the very basics and haven't got a clue about all these different types of processors to be honest. For example, what do the letter prefixes refer to on the processors such as P8400, T6400 and so on?

    Thanks for your time
    Matt

Core 2 Duo MINIMUM! Your correct, 3gb only usable with 32bit Vista

Can you post the 2 you are trying to compare?

Basically exactly the same bar the processor and RAM.

Samsung Q210 AS02 is the winner here... good all-rounder!!

Effective 4.52 GHz with 3gb ram... May get a little warmer than the AS04...

    But more power...

Cheers, just need to hope the credit card turns up ASAP then as it looks like the AS02 is going to be discontinued, lots of places have stopped stocking it and the one place I was going to get it from only has one left in stock and has raised the price £53 in the past few days!! :x

More power consumes more power ;o) (although they also become more efficient with each generation).
So dont go getting a 2.2 C2D if you plan to just sit and surf

So there would be an extended battery life with the Centrino then?

In terms of processing speed, would the difference between the two be noticeable at all, mainly just sitting and surfing though I do like to run a lot of applications simultaneously.

Thanks for all the input so far people and it's looking like the AS02 is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack now these new models have been released.

Centrino is still core 2 duo but the mobile version... uses less power and doesn't get so hot...

As for processor speed... it will be a few seconds off your boot time and program load time...

You have maximum ram capacity at 3gb so its pretty pointless having 4gb installed. Its not utilised so technically using power for no reason ( unless you upgrade to 64bit at a later date...)

If your running multiple windows / apps then 3gb will be adequate...

With computers its best to future proof them as much a possible... and with windows 7 on the horizon I would go with the faster processor... Ram is a cheap upgrade whereas the processor may involve a new motherboard...

Vista 32bit will probably see about 3.5gb of ram.
And the T6400 is a C2D as well.

    Thanks again sapnn3rs.

I've been thinking that I may replace Vista with XP depending how I get on with it as I have never used it before. All the drivers are available from the Samsung website so I know that it will be possible to do it but one question regarding this, will XP recognise anymore than 3GB of RAM or is the same case with Vista and you need a 64-bit OS to utilise the full 4GB memory?

OK cheers for the extra replies everyone, think I have made my mind up now though I'm thinking of a Q310 instead as they can be bought for about £30 cheaper. They're exactly the same spec apart from a 13.3" screen as opposed to a 12.1" and the keyboard is supposed to be a bit more user friendly being slightly larger.

Just need the damn Credit Card now!!
