just got my new sony vaio laptop a couple months back but ive only just noticed that it will only charge the battery to 79%. after that it just says plugged in not charging. however it doesnt lose any charge just stays at 79%. anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it?

You probably need to cycle the battery every so often to calibrate it. The procedure varies from manufacturer to manufacturer but basically run the battery all the way down till the computer shuts down then put it on charge till it's fully charged. It's probably mentioned in your manual

never had this problem with my old laptop. will try it though, cant do no harm can it lol

probably a dead cell on a 6cell battery. As far as I'm aware there is no fix for that.

Batteries are usually put under the bracket of consumable so likely they won't replace it. However, given the age of it, that shouldn't happen, as such complain a bit and you'll get a new one. Regardless of calibrating (letting it run flat) it should still charge higher than 79% and as such, as stated above, is likely a cell has gone...
