Laptop DVD drive replacement advice please

The DVD drive on my Fujitsu Lifebook AH532 has just recently stopped playing (shop bought) DVD’s (The same DVD’s that it played fine earlier this year). It still plays audio CD’s ok.

VLC spins the DVD drive, and picks up the duration of the film, but won’t play it.
Cyberlink Mediasuite10 (which came pre-installed) lists the title of the film but wont play it.
Windows explorer has no trouble seeing the disc and all the contents.

Seeing that the programmes can still access the drive and play CD’s and they used to play DVD’s, I am assuming that the drive itself is on the way out.

The drive is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ8C0, but I can’t find any as a replacement.

Does anyone know if there are any other drives that would be a suitable fit, or have any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your time.

cheapest option get a usb dvd/cd player/writer

Maybe accidentally changed the region of the player? Can you play the dvd using an alternative programme?

can you read and copy off all the data from a data dvd? if so, then there's nothing wrong with the drive

Didn't know about these, so thanks. Would prefer to have an internal one, but this could be a good standby.

Checked and it's still correct. Thanks for your help though.

Yes, I can copy some of the data (not the film parts - some kind of anti piracy protection warning appears), so it seems strange that none of the players will play the discs. Not sure what the problem might be. I've re-installed VLC player with no effect.

How do you know the DVD player has stopped working? Is there power? Have you checked upper and lower filters? Have you tested the DVD player outside of windows?

The DVD's won't play so that's why I think it's stopped working. There is power as it plays CD's. Don't know what upper / lower filters are & not sure how to test it outside of windows

Sorry misread your post. I've tried to edit my comment but hasn't worked. What I should have asked was How do you know it's faulty? Have you checked upper and lower filters? Have you tested DVD player out of windows. Possibly windows could be corrupted.

Please see my above post (it went for moderating!) Seems strange that the drive plays CD's but not DVD's using the same programme.

From what is happening does not sound like a fault with DVD drive it does sound like a fault with windows. I suggest you should try to backup your personal files and reinstall windows. Don't forget you will need to reload all your programs v

Boot a live copy of Ubuntu and try play it so you can rule out OS/Software issues.

Try a data dvd not a video dvd. From what you're describing it does not sound like the dvd drive is faulty so swapping it will not solve your issues

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, I'll work through them.
