laptop getting too hot and switching off

As above, not sure if its because i need a new battery and so its on charge all the time, or whether there is a problem with the fan. Works for around 30 mins then switches off. Its a Dell Inspiron 1501, know i need to get a battery, but not sure if this is why im getting the problem.

    Thanks

what do you have it standing on... your lap or a table?

the air needs to be able to flow around it.

Its overheating, probably needing a new fan, do ya have any warranty with dell?

If you have a mains supply attached always take out your battery, Unless you are charging it.

The fan maybe full of fluff give it a little suck with a hoover.

Or if you feel brave take it apart. ( unless it's in warranty )

hi ashley, had it about 18 months now so out of warranty

probably needs the lint / fluff cleaning out of the heatsink.

    Turn laptop on.
Allow it to warm up until fan starts to blow.
    Find exhaust grille.
Squirt air in from a can of compressed air.
Do this a few times until dust stops blowing out.

errr... i would not do this!!

main reason is that you're using compressed air (higher pressure than the fan) to blow dust back into the machine.. this could have adverse affects on other components.

if i were you i'd take some of panels off at the bottom and see if you can get to the heatsink that way. i think most inspirons have large removable panel on the bottom which allow you to access the ram, hdd and cpu/heatsink.

look for a bit copper coloured piece of metal and remove any layers of lint/fluff that have built up.

Can you hear the fan working?

If its still in warranty Dell should send someone out with the part to fit it... they suggested they send it to me by post and I asked them if they were kidding! They need to send an engineer WITH, for me!

Sometimes Dell will just waive the charges for parts anyway.

Hope you get on okay x x

My laptop gets really hot, I have little red marks on my lef from sitting it there, I can hear my fan working but when I tip my laptop up so the fan is pointing to the ceiling it spits stuff out at me lol.

I'm under insurance so I should probably get it looked at lol.

ok but there are no removable panels on mine and it's done the trick for me so far with no obvious problems since June last year and the dust has been blown back out by the fan every time

Had the same problem with my Acer and also with my current (useless) Medion, you need to carefully (unplug from the mains) unscrew the housing screws from the underside of your laptop case, you will see the fan and you should see that it is covered with dust, best to use compressed air to blow the dust that has gathered in side (make sure you try to keep the compressed air tin as upright as possible as water can blow out), its amazing the amount of gunk that gathers inside the fan,

I do this every 6 months now or whenever the fan starts to kick in 2 much and it works fine, i also never run of the battery and always have it connected to the mains, will def see a difference, you can get the air from ebay or whsmiths, other stationers etc,
