    Laptop help

    Hi
Recieved my laptop today on here from another user and was working great until about 11pm
I turned it on and it booted up as normal
The desktop loaded and then suddenly the screen went black and I can't do anything
I had been using the laptop alot before updating all the stuff
So is this a total failure or has it just overheated?
Any help would be much appreciated

When you switch the laptop off and turn it on is the screen black then (in other words you see no writing come up. and the usual BIOS screen before it launches into XP/Vista/Linux)?

It is a dell inspiron 6000

It boots up until the desktop and then crashes
I'm going to try safe mode but don't really know what I'm doin
At least my iPod browser works

Try safe mode for now, F8 should get you there

If it boots to the desktop then its very unlikely a hardware fault unless a memory paging error is occuring, most likely a driver or windows dll file has got corrupted somewhere, see if you can boot into safe mode fine, if so chances are its a corrupted driver.

If you have just received the laptop, there will not be any crucial info that you would want to back up yourself, if you have the know how I suggest you try a reinstall, but ensure you at least you have the driver for the particular wi-fi card inside your laptop so when you do get it up and running you are at least connected to the internet to download from dells website all the drivers for your particular model for sound, graphics, north/southbridge etc etc.

    Thanks for the advice
I tried turning it on normally one last go and it worked for about 10 mind and came up saying there had been a chnage to the software and I needed to report the problem the only thing is I don't have the os disk as that was going to be sent at a later date as it couldn't be found
The only tying I have done is update stuff via windows update so I'm confused
What can I do in safe mode?

If you've only done windows updates then hopefully you have system restore active, that will let you set it back to just before the updates.

    Safe mode is pretty much just the essential windows files only, everything else is disabled so you can troubleshoot your system. Have a read of this;

I'll try that as a last resort

If your laptop has had a new motherboard fitted then you will need to contact microsoft, Your windows COA key is linked to the original hardware that your laptop was built with and changing the mobo means that windows sees it as a different PC,If you contact microsoft they should let you activate your copy with the new mobo,Never done this personally but if you open a new thread saying "help activating windows" then i am sure someone here can help.

Or you could always download and install windows 7 free for a year,
