    Laptop help needed

I've got a Toshiba Equium laptop and for some reason when powered on it gives out a high pitch beep. I'm not to sure but think this could possibly be related to the ram? if there's any laptop experts out there you opinion would be most appreciated. Cheers

Find out which BIOS your laptop is using and check here for further info on it......the POST seems to have encountered something wrong with the hardware.

It will be the text you see on the screen when you switch the laptop on....try hitting F8 or F10, or F12 or F2.....one of the function buttons will take you to the bios screen and it will tell you there which BIOS and version your laptop is using.

    Nothing comes on the screen

Could well be. Trick is, open the system up to reveal the RAM sticks, and if there's one stick, do this:

    1) Remove RAM, reseat it in original slot
    2) If still no worky, try in other slot
    3) If still, remove altogether, and see if beep code changes
    4) If still, remove everything you can get your mits on, ie harddisk, optical drive, everything attached to the USB ports, and reduce what's connected to the system to the bare minimum. Do it step by step, see if any one particular device is causing it to fail

If it's two sticks, do the same reseating lark, but juggle the modules around too. Call it module 1 and module 2, and call the slots Slot A and Slot B. Try 1 in A, 1 in B, 2 in A, 2 in B. And then continue with stemps three and four, since if the RAM seems okay, it could be the mobo or something else that';s failing, and systematically pulling bits out is the best way to find out which. Just remember to do it tidily enough that you can put it back together, too.

Thanks for your suggestions. I've just tyed removing the ram completely and it still makes the same long toned beep before turning itself off. Am i right i thinking it's not recognizing the ram when it's in there then?

Anyone elses input would be nice.

Not a ram issue if its one long continuous beep:

Continuous beep = Power supply, system board, or keyboard problem

PS... i think on Toshiba's you have to hit the TAB button to see the POST menu boot. Try it and see what it says. If youre quick enough hit the pause/break button to freeze it and make a not - it could be an AMI bios, Award bios. Pheonix bios ?

It is a continuous beep that lasts the whole 3ish seconds until it turns itself off....are you definately sure it isn't ram? becuase i was going to buy one to test it. Will try the TAB button now. Thankyou

Personally i wouldnt see it as a RAM prob.. more like the system board, worse i know but hey ....

OK first find out what bios you have... i did read somewhere that Tosh use their own BIOS but i cant be sure. Anyway if it is AMI or AWARD then 1 long beep doesnt not indicate ram - the only machine that 1 long continuous beep indicates ram is on a COMPAQ bios... so if its that then ill be amazed as its a Tosh ;-)

How many RAM stick you got in there ? If its 1 then obv no way of testing... if its 2 then try each one seperately. If you know of anyone who has the same ram then obv try and see if that works... if it still does the same then its the system board not recognising the actual ram slots.

Why not try and phone Toshiba themselves.. ive done it before with my telly and they are usually prety good with tech support. They will know by the model number of the machine EXACTLY what bios it is and what the eror code means.

It's only got one slot for ram so i can't do it that way...i'll have to have a ask around and see if any of my mates have that ram. I think phoning toshiba is probably the best idea. Again thanks for your time and suggestions:thumbsup:

No probs.. hey all this might be wrong, just putting my side across.. it maybe a ram issue after all... but there are lots of diff BIOS's out there and for some reason they stupidly use different error codes to diagnose different problems DOH !!

Best bet m8 would be to get straight on the blower to Tosh tbh. They will give you a direct answer.

Let us know how u get on ;-)
