    Laptop Help Please! Techies Needed!!

    Hi All

Toshiba Laptop Satellite L300-1AQ died. Just wouldn't load up.

I followed the manual to restore factory settings. Everything went fine, and when windows starts to load it says

No bootable device - insert boot disk and press any key.

The leptop didnt come with a disk? What do I do?

    Thanks

Go into the bios and make sure the default boot device is set to the hard drive

you need to change the boot drive to c: I think, press that key to get to the screen at the beginning where you restore the factory settings from and there will be an option on there ... bit vague I know

    That's what I meant :whistling:

Unfortunately it sounds like the hard drive may have died - I'd try going into the bios (usually F1, F2 or Delete) and seeing if it can detect the hard drive, in most cases you should be able to see the hard drive make and capacity. If it shows unknown or something like that then that usually means the hard drive has failed.

Steven how do you do that?

Jo, thanks lol, how do you do that?

I'm in the Setup bit, with the blue screen, and cannot see options for the above.

On hard disk drive, it says None. Does that confirm your suspicion? Is it dead? Less than a month old
Somehow, it managed to install some of Vista again in the recovery?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks so far.

    send it back.

That sounds quite strange that it's a new machine and the restore went fine, a new drive failing after the recovery has gone fine is unusual. If the bios can't see the hard drive though then it's not going to be able to boot anything. My only other thought as to why it isn't being detected is because the drive has come loose but they're usually quite snug on laptops which means this is unusual as well.

Do you have any Windows XP CDs? If so I'd recommend having a look at the following link and build a bootable CD:

    ubcd4win.com/

This is basically an operating system entirely contained on a CD, you can boot and use the PC with this CD even if there's no hard drive. It's very useful in many circumstances as it means you can boot your PC and see if the hard drive is showing there or not.

Bargain surfer, thats the plan if I can't fix it. Have the receipt, from a deal @ Morrisons, but thrown away the box. Doubt they will have a replacement and not sure if it will be a problem without the box?

John, thanks for your reply, gona have a look and open it a little to see if its loose.

The machine OS is Windows Vista, and I have no XP CDs.

Yeah its new, after christmas if I remember correctly.

    I'm not kidding dude.

Just send it back Toshiba CS is very good. If the data on the drive is lost ot corrupt you may not be able to re-install Vista.

If it does start working after a Fidget, Be sure to "create restore DVDs" first thing i do with all my systems.

The bootCD has no link to the operating system on the hard drive, it simply needs files from Windows XP to build itself. You can download it as a torrent, since you have a legimate Windows license then it's not illegal to use it.

Thanks for the above two inputs.

I have open the back, took the hard drive out, and put it back in, and set up and see the drive again, going to go from there to try and recover Vista again.

Sale of goods act... It is not fit for purpose if it isn't working, supermarkets usually don't argue much.
