Anyway, that is not true. If your just going to use it for web browsing and your happy with the size of most netbook screens, then go with a netbook. If, however, you do envisage yourself wanting to use optical media from time to time on the device, then maybe invest in a laptop as they will have a built in drive.

You can use both of those with a netbooks.

If that's all you will use it for then go for a netbook. Lots of typing, playing games, photo editing, watching films then a laptop is probably best

Go try out a Netbook, if they form factor appeals to you then it's most likely the way to go, if you find the screen too small then I'd try finding a 13.3" laptop with an ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) Processor, that's marketed at the Netbook market, such as Acer's Timeline series, they offer great battery life and there have been some amazing deals on here recently.

A netbook = small, light and portable, low spec with a screen size of typically 10.1 inches. With the bigger battery, they can last up to 10 hours (supposidly) but do NOT have a CD/DVD drive - saving space and power.

A notebook = laptop. Higher spec, larger screen, more power, DVD drive/burner, hdmi and can do everything.

For basic browsing, YouTube, Facebook etc, a netbook will be fine - the person who could not do this was a moron who did not know how to switch on his router, or turned off the wifi on the netbook. If you're happy for a small screen, get a netbook. If you want something larger, get a notebook or a ULV (a light laptop with more power than a netbook, but less than a laptop - in between)
