I have a laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C50-A and it has two RAM slots, one is used for a 4GB stick and the other is empty. My question is what RAM is compatible and is it still the case that the RAM has to match? As in it has to be two the same, I couldn't have the existing 4GB and then install either a 2GB or 8GB with it, could I? I've taken the existing 4GB stick out and took a photo of both sides of it, but this app on the iPhone won't allow me to add any pics. I'll try and reply to see if I can add the pics that way?

You can mix capacity as you like.

Hopefully that'll work?

Evidently not. You'd think there would be a simple way to upload a pic onto this site without having to host it myself...

Will any RAM that'll fit work, or will it have to match the 'ddr' type as well, and if so, how do I find that out for the existing stick? Cheers.

You need to search in the manual or online for what speeds of memory your laptop can take. When I search for the model number you have given most places day it only has one ram slot, so think the model number must be longer that the one you've given.

I think it's C50-A-1DV, thanks.

You need to match the type, so you'll need DDR3L. (also called 1.35v DDR3).

Speed & timings don't have to match, both stick will run at the lowest speed they have in common. PC3L-12800/DDR3L-1600 is a very common type so you might as well though.

There are a number of Tosh Sat C50-A models. Probably best to throw your precise model number into the Crucial memory selector or run Crucial's systemscanner program, then use the results to identify your requirements and compatibles. uk.crucial.com/gbr…des

Try the Crucial system scanner.

I used the scanner and it suggested:
uk.crucial.com/gbr…596

So I'm pretty sure I found it cheaper on Amazon:
amazon.co.uk/Cru…r3l

It also said the max RAM it could take was 16GB, but for what I use it for, 8 should be enough. I think I'll get around to formatting it completely and doing a fresh install of Windows 10.

I feel like I should know all of this as I was always messing around with desktop PCs when I was younger, but haven't been inside one for over 10 years and this is actually the first ever laptop I've opened up (I had to check YouTube to find out how to remove the RAM from the slot...)

Anyway, if that RAM is the same, which I'm pretty sure it is, I'll probably just get that, if anyone can confirm I've not missed some tiny details that'll mean it won't work?

Thanks all!

Check on ebay. I often pick up 4GB sticks for under £5

They do seem to go a lot higher than that recenly though. But I search every night and stick a bid on. I wouldnt pay more than £10 for 1 x 4GB Strick though. Id sell you one but I only have 1 left and im refurbishing 6 laptops this week.

Like others have said they dont need to match, but for 100% Compatability check the other stick and search eaby for the same model number.

I try and match the speeds at least when adding ram. But its not 100% needed. Some older HP Elitebooks dont like different speed ram sticks, but the newer probooks dont care.
