Laptop recommendations decent screen, mid range.

Sister just bought our mother a cheap Lenovo that needs returning to John Lewis (poor customer service by the way) so I’m stepping in.

Needs to be lightweight, Windows 10, 15 inch minimum screen and decent resolution.

She only uses it to surf the web but the cheaper ones seem to just fall apart.

Any solid choices around the 500 mark?

If she’s only using it to surf the web have you considered a chrome book? Would be ideal.

Windows 10 and not made of chocolate essential.

Just realised I’m looking at an Acer laptop we once bought her, it’s been sat under my TV for years. Slim, metal, absolute garbage. Think the keyboard broke after a few months. Remind me to send it to the tip!

It’s frustrating because she only web surfs. But needs a decent screen at a minimum.

I use old Thinkpads myself, but the screens are awful and they’re way too heavy.
Honor Magicbook 15
It's really solidly built all metal chassis, display is a 1080p IPS, Ryzen 5 3500u, 8GB RAM (Dual Channel) and 256GB NVMe drive means this thing will run beautifully for years to come. 6 Hour battery life. 65W Fast charging through USB-C.

That could be the winner. Thanks!

I've got the 14" Huawei Version and it's great,
14" has the advantage of a backlit keyboard but the 15" has space for 2.5" drive inside (if you can find the right cable on AliExpress or eBay)

This is a great spec, but for light use it is overkill, this will handle gaming easily

Yeah the specs are too much for the use, but it's in budget and OP is concerned about build quality.

You're only gonna get decent build quality with higher specs.

You could probably find a ryzen 3 laptop with a good build quality, My Lenovo had a really good build quality I’m sure they’d do a lower power variant of the ideapad

Cheapest decent 15" Ryzen 3 i've seen recently is a refurb Ideapad for £300, but those Ideapads don't have decent build or decent screens, (even some of last years L series 15" has 720p TN displays).
I'm willing to be proven wrong, if you can find a decent build quality laptop with at least a semi decent display sub £500, then I'm sure a lot of people on this site will benefit from it.
The laptop this will be replacing is a cheaper idea pad. I3, 4gb ram.

Screen isn’t great and it has issues with waking - has to be shut down to get a proper battery level.

It’s being sent back for replacement and unfortunately I’ll be inheriting it.
Also found this Medion with an Aluminium chassis, 8th Gen Core i5, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD with 3 Year Warranty 1080p display, which I think is IPS, but I can only find panel type mentioned on a revie for the i7 model,
MEDION AKOYA S6445 -£499.99
laptopoutlet.co.uk/med…tml

It's £744 at Currys but reviews there seem to criticise the markings on the keyboard as not being very visible.
Thanks for the tip, I bought the Honor.
