I have a windows Vista disc, it is only a back up disc though, when I put this in nothing happens!!!!

The laptop is trying to boot off a network - it has not been set to boot off an optical disc or hard disc OR the hard disc is not bootable. Simple as that!

Backup disc won't boot if it has not been made bootable. You need a disc that is bootable.

Thanks for the reply.....

Does that mean it should boot up ok with a legit disc????

Have you put the disc in, switched it off, then on again?

Yes it should do...

With the caveat that the disc is bootable which most discs supplied with the PC (and all legally purchased OS's) are. I suspect that your backup disc is a hard drive image, in which case you need to install the OS, then the restoration software, and then use the restoration software to restore the image? How did you make the backup disc?

If you purchased an OS with the laptop it is not unreasonable to expect it either installed or ready to install on startup. Contact who you bought it from and ask them what they will do about it. If there is a backup of an installation it must have been created by someone and it is unlikely to be the manufacturer.

Ah, in that case you need to go into the BIOS and change the settings so that it boots from the optical drive. There are different ways to go into the BIOS depending on the computer. When starting up the PC, you may need to press F2 or press F10 or the DELETE key. You should see a message that informs you as to how to access the BIOS.

In the manual it says press F2 to enter BIOS, but when I press it nothing happens, I have pressed every key on the keypad...no joy.....

If you have pressed F2 during the startup diagnostics screen and there is no effect then you will need to contact the manufacturer. F2 must be pressed during startup when you see the message that says "Press F2 to enter setup" or "press F2 to enter BIOS" or similar.

If you have the CD in the drive, press something along the lines of F12 or F8 (I believe F12) for boot options, and tell it to boot from the CD/DVD drive. This will activate the CD (if the CD works).

You need to find the settings for the Boot options and choose the optical drive as the first boot device. Your user guide will detail this.
