    Laptop warranty info .

    Hi i have had a samsung laptop for about two months now and the some of the buttons on the keyboard are coming off.

    I upgraded the ram and was wondering does this void the warranty.Have looked on google but mixed answers.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    If there was a warranty seal on the laptop and you broke it, I think you're onto plumbs.

    keyboard buttons are easily replaceable anyway.

    If there wasn't a warranty seal, put the original memory back in the device and take it back or call for tech support - they might actually send replacement keys out to save sending the whole thing back.

    Hi how do i know if there was a warranty seal . Samsung r519 btw .

    it should be obvious as it should be a label that tears along where the memory door or bottom casing comes off as you open the unit.

    If there are stickers that warn of possible revocation of warranties, you can safely ignore them. It is illegal for the stickers to supersede the law. If the laptop has inherent faults, it makes no odds what warnings are given with regards to revoking of warranties. Furthermore, if inherent faults occur outside the 1 year warranty period, you still have recourse for a claim if the time in which the fault develops is disproportional to reasonable usage of the laptop.

    One thing to bear in mind is that the warranty DOES NOT apply for faults that occur due to user error. If the keys were damaged due to an error on your part (and if it could be proven) then there is no course for recompense. It's up to you and your conscience to decide what course of action you take.

    They might not check the RAM but I guess it depends where you install the chips. Some laptops you need to remove the keyboard to install RAM chips but from what you're saying it doesn't sound like this is the case.

    It also depends on if you send it back, is the repair firm going to follow processes exactly, which in some cases may begin with checking for any warranty seals and also running diagnostics for quality assurance before sending back so if the amount of memory shows up to be more than the amount preinstalled they may look further into it.

    If you are going to send it back, I personally would put the original chip(s) back in just so that it looks identical to how it was purchased.

    Sorry if this sounds like paranoia but I'd hate for you to end up losing warranty cover for something as simple as a keyboard key losing its label.

    ElliotC's reply has just come in whilst I've been typing this and they make a fair point about the labels. The fault you are reporting would not be impacted by upgrading the RAM so it shouldn't apply however I would still err on the side of caution if at all possible.

    When I sent my laptop off in March. I had only the "J" key missing. However they replaced the whole keyboard.
