    Laptop with HDMI and 8Gb RAM Support

    Hi,

    Any suggestions for good deals for laptops (not netbooks) that have the following features:

    * 4Gb RAM out of the box, expandable to 8Gb
    * HDMI / DVI
    * Non-share graphics capable of good 2D performance at full HD.

    *Not* important:

    * DVD / Bluray
    * Resolution of internal screen
    * OS (destined for Linux)
    * Speakers
    * HD capacity

    Thanks

    Sean

    Yes, any modern dual-core processor is fast enough for my purposes.

    My requirement is that I can support multiple VM's under VMWare Desktop for Linux and these will typically be instances of Server 2003 with the odd instance of XP Professional / running Enterprise Developer and occasionally Adobe FlexBuilder.

    In this scenario, processor speed isn't the limiting factor; with the exception of solution building in FlexBuilder and Visual Studio, the majority of processing is relatively infrequent and bursty.

    However I need a decent response time ./ short latency when a VM *is* called upon to do something, and paging memory in and out to service this would cause real problems

    At the moment I manage this with a combination of a Dell M60 running VMWare Workstation 6.5 (quite good in it's day, but creaking now) and a multiple server VM's under VMWare Server, running remotely on an elderly IBM desktop with 4Gb (of which only 3Gb is usable due to chipset constraints).

    Good question though!

    A quick update.

    As this really has to be quiet and relatively easy to shift as opposed to portable, I've abandoned getting a laptop in favour of a very unsexy but relatively high quality desktop.

    It's a ]Lenovo M58p but with 8Gb.

    I've had one of these before in an older incarnation and although there are cheaper deals for the same spec. they're very quiet, reliable and built like tanks.

    Not for everyone (and plug ugly) but well suited for my purposes.
