    laptop wont boot.

A neighbour has a problem with their laptop, it will only boot to the screen that offers to boot into safe mode etc or start normally. regardless of which option is pressed, the laptop returns to the same screen.
Any ideas on what problem might be?

Sounds like his Windows is corrupt, either by a virus or something else. He/she will need to re-install it from the recovery CD. Note, this will wipe ALL the data on it so hopefully his/her stuff is backed up....

Worst case, the hard disk is faulty too so this wil need replacing but it's quite easy to do and not too expensive to buy (about£40)

that was my thoughts, just wanted to see if i was missing something. Its an emachines, and they didnt create a restore disc, so will need to source a vista disc to reinstall i expect.

Check the manual if you have one, it may have a recovery partition on the laptop hard disk which you access by pressing F10 or F12 or something similar. It may have a local disk testing utility too (if you're lucky!). Good luck

i offered. but it seems the laptop isnt theirs, but someone they know.

They should be able to use the windows repair system by booting from the xp disk, this will just replace the corrupt files rather than re-installing all of windows..

    see michaelstevenstech.com/XPr…htm

Or even try using chkdsk /R if you can get into safe mode or command prompt.. Just in case it is a bad sector on the HD

both of these take less than 30 mins to run...

As someone who often fixes computers, i get this kind of thing a lot, either you tell them how much you want to fix it, and they really want it for nothing, or they cant be bothered to do anything themselves to achieve it either, such as look for any disks.

it probably isnt all that old, might be a decent system IF it had a fresh install, let them give it to you rather than throw away!

but anyway, some people are a pain in the rear!
