Let me hear about your job..................

After years in the fitness field (as some on here are aware) working as a Personal Trainer, I am considering a career change. Nothing definite yet but looking into post production, editing or something similar.

Was looking into courses but I don't want to commit to a 1-2 year course, then find out it isn't for me. So was thinking of a short / part time course to wet my feet. Any ideas? It seems anything that involves learning final cut pro is a bonus as its pretty much industry standard these days. Also, how easy is it to get this type of work? Would I have to take on alot of unpaid work initially like an internship or could I simply just get out there and start making independent movies for my show reel.

Any helpful comments, suggestions, advice and guidance is much appreciated........

p.s. - Even if I change my career, I'll still be here for you guys when the gym thread gets busy again after New Year

how much do u earn as a personal trainer?

Post production is a tricky area to get into, the usual route is to take a job as a runner, basically a dogsbody, and work your way up.

Yeah. Becoming a runner is the main way to get your foot in the door. I'm prepared for a huge pay cut initially but I don't think I could keep shtum if people started treating me like a doormat and showing no respect. Perhaps I could start as an editing assistant or help wedding videographers or something?

o no!! why are u moving on from being a personal trainer. ur so good at it. u know ur stuff and all. defo wet ur feet and see if u really wanna change and all. do adult courses? i dunno really. my friend is doing little week long courses at the mo...she been made redundant. her hubby earns enough so she is learning little things like cooking/ spanish etc.

My friend was treated like a dog as a runner and almost daily would end up in tears.
Could you manage being ordered to buy a bottle of vodka/cocaine at 8am for a certain actor, have to face daily bollockings when it wasnt her fault, yet not chin anyone.

Cheers MB. Yeah I'm planning on doing some short courses 1st to test the waters before I commit - plus it proberly wouldn't be viable for me to become a full-time student as the bills don't pay themselves but will try to keep my options open.

Good point DKLS, from being my own boss to becoming someones skivvy proberly is a task which I couldn't do for long. Any other routes into the business?

I'm self employed too, and I couldn't imagine suddenly having to adjust my time scales to fit in with other people and to work within a set number of hours during the day, it'd drive me nuts to be told what to do and when and how to do it!

Consider before you change all the positives you have to being self-employed, can't beat that independence and autonomy

Good luck in whatever you choose to do x x

I was booked onto a part-time 12-week course in video production which sounded really cool and would give me an insight into many different areas of the industry, only to be called two days before the course was due to start saying that there wasn't enough ppl booked on the course for it to go ahead....:-( Still currently beasting people in the gym though :-D

    UPDATE

Managed to book myself onto a 12 week evening course which was fun, although I was missing some classes due to working with clients. I think media is not something I would want to pursue as a career. I still have no idea what I want to do! If I go to uni, I will have to quit the fitness game completely to focus on studies. What is your job and experiences? Just kind of looking for ideas at the mo.

Don't bother jacking it in for Uni IMO ... although it's good to have a degree under my belt and Uni was a good **** up ... I'd prefer to gone down the work experience route. In fact, I already had my foot in the door before Uni and left a good job to do it. I'm now earning less than before Uni. Fail, lol.

I done a similar thing with a college course ten years ago! Was earning good money but decided I needed to improve my qualifications at the time. It took years before I was earning anywhere near the same amount
