Like netbooks but want a cd drive

This sounds bizarre i know....for ages i have been humming and aarghing over getting a netbook for my son. i love the samsung nc10 and n130 and could afford one of those. Really practical they love searching the internet etc and i could use it as well. due to size they could also take it out of the house which we have never done before even with our other older laptop.
However...heres the big problem....when we go on holiday it would be lovely if they could use a laptop to watch a few fims etc on but i have no idea of laptop prices and whats good and whats not.
Would it make sense or even work to buy an external cd drive thing that we could take with the netbook when we go away or would that not work, screen size, compatibility etc. it seems a good idea if it would work as we only go away 2 or 3 times a year and a netbook is more suited the rest of the year. Is this possible. Could they watch films on a netbook or is it not possible.
If its not possible if anyone can recommend a laptop i would appreciate it.

I got a external drive for mine i think i paid about £13 on ebay. It works find. Took it on holiday with my son and he watched films and his cd on it.

Or you could just copy the films onto the hard drive instead of carrying loads of cd's around.

Use a DVD Ripper and load them onto the HDD or onto a cheap USB Flash drive, no extra luggage that way either.

Will have to look at that, sorry i am really untechnical...that sounds great. As it will be a new machine there should be loads of room as well and we can delete afterwards. Have you any idea if i used a usb flash drive what size i should use....can you give me some example of what one two hour film might use up just as an example.

Just had a thought...yes i have my own now and then...although the amount of questions i ask on here i am starting to doubt myself...
we have lots of films and programs on our sky plus...would it be possible to get some of those onto a usb stick as i notice under the flap at the front of the sky plus there is a usb port.

You can normally convert a 2hr DVD to a (roughly) 700mb .avi. I use] total video converter it's only £3.50 and very easy to use. As for copying off your skyplus box, the usb slot on it isn't for that and it's not very easy to copy stuff off your box as all the data on the hard drive is encrypted.
