    Limited edition pictures / art

    Hello
I went passed a art shop today and I did see a really nice picture drawn by a artist.
It said it was 132 of a limited edition of 500.

The guy said they are not avaliable from this artist anymore, and is quite rare and a bargain..

    It was £115.

Am I right in thinking these things can go up in price in years to come?? Or am I wasting my money?

Unless the artist suddenly gets very famous then don't count on it going up in price.

It all depends on the artist tbh

I regular buy limited editions from art shows but only for work I like and do not care about value fluctuations.

Last purchase was one of seven, artist then got interviewed for a article in the Telegraph and his stuff has shot up in value and he's now working for Saatchi.....

Local Bristol guy so we still keep in touch too

Thats the way I see it, don't buy anything just for the name

Great site I use is ]POW

A peice of art is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
My advise is...if you like it buy it.....it might be worthless to someone else.
But someone might love it and be willing to pay any amount to buy it.

Does anyone know of sites that buy and sell this type of stuff, so I can look and compare???

Or should I look on ebay?

Never buy art on EBAY, used established sites as there is so much carp out there. Most stuff sold are secondary scanned prints

If these are original pieces then a run of 500 seems very high. If they are prints, limited to 500 then I would suggest that it is unlikely they are going to increase in value at all and I would actually suggest that the price of £115 is expensive. Either way, I would suggest you only buy it to appreciate it and not as an investment.

As many have said here, buy art you like and enjoy, and never, never buy from ebay or other auction sites. You really need to physically see the art to know if there is a bond between you and it.

When moving to the area i am currently in, i took time to list all gallery's and when i had free time, i would visit them. Slowly with taking name down you build up an idea of what local talent there is. I am lucky my area here is bursting with gallery's to get lost in.

One thing you can do, and i have known people to do this. If you buy a piece of art you like and then like other pieces too. You can then try and get them some publicity yourself. Splash there names about on websites, write to the many art publications. This can work in a couple of ways. First you may find some place is willing to do a double page feature on your artist, this can push prices up, secondly contact the artists saying what you are doing as you enjoy his/her work so much. A friend is on many mailing lists to buy exclusive prints from doing this and gets offered them at discount prices.

diagree again - it really depends on who the artist is. If he is famous then a 500 run can sell straight out. If an unknown it may be difficult to sell any of the stuff.

if its 132out of 500 then surely it will be a copy of an original

all limited editions are copies of the original - there would be for e.g. the original (expensive) and then a certain number (say 500) copies of the original, all authenticated and signed by the artist (and these are less expensive)

I think it was 500, and was signed and numbered by the artist.. Looks good.

I would look on internet (rather then specifically ebay) for the same limited edition print and see what others are selling it for. If you can't find much then chances are is a new one and hence should not be expensive. Can you remember the name of the artist?

    Ok.

    I have found the artist.

    It is Linda Jane Smith

I have found loads of her works, and really like them.

The price in the shop was in a nice frame, obviously the prices on the link are the prints only....

I like more on the site now, but would need a price to have them framed..

It should n't cost too much to frame (depends on what frame you lke), If you tell me what prints you like I can find out for you (friend I know who has shop) whether the print has a secondary market and how much they should cost in a shop just to make sure you are not paying too much for it. I have 3 Linda Jane Smiths myself - I love the cats. You can PM me if you'd rather

there is quite a few pieces on here that are showing as Originals and in the region of $55-$80 maybe worth buying an original instead?
