    Line Test For Broadband

Is there anyway to find out what speeds are on your line for getting the best from a broadband provider?

Or is there a place online where you can look to see where speed tests have been done like sky in your area (postcode) to the exchange?

thought most ISP's had a speed check for your line on there sites so you can get the best available

Sky doesnt, were having sky this thursday but i dont know whether to just go for the £10 a month 8 to 16meg or just stick with the 2 to 8 meg speed

i was just wondering if i could get the faster one in my area?

    Dan my test said this:

    * Your estimated download speed is: 19,105 kbits/sec - (18.66Mb) - (2,388 KBytes/sec)

    * You told us your speed was Up to 8Mb and your ISP: BT Total Broadband

    * Check Again? - Would you like to leave your comments/reviews on BT Total Broadband?

    * With ONSPEED Mobile you could experience Broadband-type speeds on your mobile phone.

does that mean i can get 18meg speeds?

I like this speed test site:
    speedtest.net/

That looks like your already getting 18 meg..........

Hi Saxo, those tests are no use to you and I, as you will be going on Sky's LLU service.

    Use this:

    ]http//ww…php

and after doing the first page, choose the ADSL2 test (at the bottom of the list of exchanges) - you'll need you line attenuation which you should be able to get from your BT homehub.

The second test will then tell you what you will be able to get from Sky.

I think I mentioned this before, as you're with BT at present, there are probably contention issues on BT's equipment, when you move to SKY, there won't be, and on the MID package, you'll get the full 8 meg, which if you're not downloading like a demon - should be lightning fast for you!

If you start on Mid, you can always upgrade, if you start on MAX, you can't downgrade for 12 months.

Have you had your router yet? and secondly, have you had a good poke around on ]skyuser.co.uk - I can't stress how useful that site is!!! ;-)

To be honest with you Jayhab i loaded up that page on skyuser and thot.....eh !! lol ill have a wee poke about sometime,

good to see u back on here matey

Thing is tho Jayhab, its only an extra fiver a month to get the top speed of 16meg, and who knows i might start downloading again Wink wink !

ill go and try that test now, where do i get the attenuation? and what is it?

yeh got the router, awaiting the big day this wed lol

Believe me, the Mid package is more than enough - I have been known to do the odd bit of downloading *whistle* and even in the early evenings (shock horror) which is practically impossible on other (BT equiped) ISPs.
Even if one was to use BitTorrent (cough, cough) to download I believe it's not unusual to receive files at 500k+, grabbing whole 700mb files in say 40-60mins max. - Hell, if one was to maybe venture onto newsgroups and FTP downloads, you'd probably get a 700mb file in say 10-15mins - not that i'd know this - it's just what i've been told (wink-wink).
As for attenuation, it's the 'signal strength' or noise or something on your line and it's measured in db - mine is 43db, and my router syncs at 7616k and has remained constant for 462.28hours, since I last rebooted it (altered some settings) - so it doesn't keep 'adapting' like the BT network!
If you sign in to your homehub, you should be able to view stats (sorry, never had one so don't know how to) but I type my router's address into the address bar and hit enter, to get into mine - yours will be similar, but a different address....
I'll see if I can find out for you on the net.....

If you've ordered the Mid package, stay with Mid. Like I said you can easily upgrade if you feel the need, and don't worry about the FUP - no-one on Skyuser has received any kind of warning - yet! hehehe

Yeah Saxo, I know - that one gave me a 4 meg connection -i showed the speedtest result - which is closer to my correct speed:

    router syncs at 7616kbs
minus 'overheads' i get (on that speedtest anyway) 6500kbs

 brb - looking for bt hub stats....

Saxo - what's the model number for the hub?

    Original Poster

    errr model number?

it doesnt have a model number mate

what will i put in the attenuation box then mate? 10.0 just or 22.0

    Wowweeeeeeeeee!!

No need to do any tests Saxo - I can tell you now - if you go for MID - you'll max out at 8096kbs, if you go for MAX you'll deffo get 16***kbs!!!

Do you actually live inside the telephone exchange? Is your PC hardwired into the BT network??? hahaha

You've got absolutely no worries there my friend - roll on Wednesday!!

btw - you can call me Graham!

ps. 22 was the figure you needed!

    Original Poster

Thanks graham, yeh i know i live about a mile and a half away from the Exchange
I knew it was good altho i dont think i get the best speed from my comp, whether its maybe a whole load of **** running in the background or that

thats cool, i cant wait till wed lol

how could you tell i get or will get really good speeds?

well your attenuation for downstream is 22db, and on BT's equipment your syncing at the full 8128 which is maxed out for up to 8 meg. I sync at 43db and sync at a scratch below maxing out (on MID).

There's lots of posts on skyuser about router stats and connections. an att of approx 30db gets you 16mb, so as you're 8db below this... let's just say you'll wing it!!

    ....slightly jealous now....hehehe

You say you're a mile and a half from the exchange, which is roughly 3km (give or take)... i'm like 2.2km from the exchange (as the crow flies) and my att is 43db!! not fair - you must have the most direct cable run between your house and the exchange!!!

    pavilion

dont go wth sky people they r a very bad … dont go wth sky people they r a very bad isp]http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/

Aww man... that Tiscali test says I download at 273.07 Mbps - if only I did!!!!:giggle:

thing is, ......i want faster mate as i dont even think this is fast lol

i honesty dont think my comp is fast on broadband, im sure i must have a load of rubbish running on it that isnt needed

hmm.... well if you mean your PC as a whole is slow... how old is it, what processor / memory have you got etc...

If you mean surfing the net and (current) downloads, streaming video etc are slow, then there's a good reason.... your on the BT network and as such there are contention issues - lots of users in the area and only a finite amount of bandwidth at the exchange = bottlenecks - speed drops in evenings/busy periods.

Alternatively, another 'feature' of ISPs that use BT equipment is Bras profiling - which is very boring but basically means that although your hub syncs at 8000kbs, BT may impose a 'cap' limiting your profile to half of that = 4000, and again in busy periods the 4000 will drop... etc etc

You used to be able to find out your Bras profile by running a BT speetest:
    ]http//sp…om/
-unfortunately it doesn't work with SKY LLU, so I can't check it to see if it still does.

    Try the Namesco speedtest:

    ]http//ww…uk/

and post your results - at least I can relate to those!!

I can empathise though, before moving to SKY, fast broadband was just something that happened to other people - It's made a HUGE difference - honest!!

I'm on the Sky Max, and I only get around 4mb I reckon...

I got it to go over the 40gb cap though to be honest (PC on 24/7).

Jay/Graham - You actually using the Netgear Router, or have you put it to one side after checking certain settings?

I don't know! - you let one person use your real name, then all of a sudden everyone's using it!! only kidding...

Not sure what you mean - checking certain settings?

Yeah - i'm still using the netgear router - and thankfully have had no probs at all.

Browni, are you far from the exchange? whats your attenuation for downstream?
Have you tried the master / test socket in your house - have you had a look on skyuser?

you say you're on Max and have gone over the 40gb limit, but there is no limit on the max product?

Sorry, should have worded it better...

I got Max to not have the 40gb limit of Mid, as I tend to use more than this...

I had probs with the Netgear Router not working with the PC Wireless Card, so got the settings which are not there in order to use my old Router if you get my drift.

As far as the exchange distance is concerned, I have no idea. In fact, as for attenuation, master socket and Skyuser, that would be a no also...

from experience?Unless you mean the Michael Jackson meaning of … from experience?Unless you mean the Michael Jackson meaning of 'bad'..cheapest, most reliable, fastest ISP i've ever had

you must not download alot then lol .... wen you ring them up be cos of a fault they put you thou to sum guy that cant speack english ..... all the people i no on the site where i download from have moved to fast.net or be.co.uk

    ohhhh kay........ Browni...

do you know how to log into your router?
type 192.168.0.1 into the address bar
if you havn't altered the passwords, they'll be admin and sky, it will tell you what your stats are:

if your downstream is 8096kbs and your upstream is 768kbs: 1) you're on max & 2) you're on gdmt and not ADSL2+, which you need to be on if you want anywhere near 16mb.

however it doesn't stop there - you'll need a downstream attenuation of 35db or lower to make it worthwhile moving over.

If your attenuation is anything over 43/44db, then your speed will be less - even on the MAX product.

As mentioned, there are a number of things you can do to max out your connection and get the very best from it that you can - I can go into it - but it's best if you do the above things first!

A namesco speedtest: ]http//ww…uk/ will also help remedy any probs....

    pavilion

you must not download a lot then, lol .... when you ring them up because … you must not download a lot then, lol .... when you ring them up because of a fault, they put you through to some guy that can't speak English ..... all the people i know on the site where I download from have moved to fast.net or be.co.uk

I won't mention the irony of your post!!!! lol. (i've made a few corrections) - no disrespect, but I can't stand textspeak!

Let's just say, I download my fair share! Moving to other providers is great - if they're in your area - for a fiver a month, Sky is FAB

    Original Poster

Ok my speedtest on that max was

    3291 Kbps download
    365 Kbps Download

    my spec is:

    MD Sempron 64 3400+, 2.0Ghz,
    NVIDIA GEforce FX 5600
    1 GB DDR (1024mb PC3200 DDR ram)
    160 GB HD
    10/100 Mbps Network Card Onboard

Ok Saxo - at a guess - it's not your PC!

As your router syncs at 8000kbs and namesco says you're only getting 3291kbps, it's possible my estimate of a 4000kbs Bras profile may have been spot-on!!

Running virus checks, disc defrags and spyware removal programs will ensure your machine is tip-top, but in all honesty it's your current connection that'll be making it feel so slow. Come Wednesday, on MID, you'll be easily twice as fast as you are now - and that's constant - not reliant on 'off peak' surfing!!!
