Living Wage Employers - Where to buy your christmas gifts

The season of spending is upon is - it's the time of year to shop till we drop and make sure our loved ones get really spoilt this Christmas. But for some people Christmas isn't all mince pies and mulled wine - it's the busiest season for retailers! While we're buzzing around looking for that extra special treat - hundreds of workers are doing double shifts right up until the 25th Dec and then back again on Boxing Day for the sales!

We know you want to spend responsibly this Christmas, but sometimes don't know where to start.

We know you would support Living Wage retailers, but don't know who they are.

We know you think all of us deserve a Merry Christmas regardless of where we work.

That's why we've got together with all our Living Wage retailers and created a handy guide to help you choose really lovely presents and support those who go further to pay their staff enough to meet the costs of living!

Little drummer boy drum roll please.....

Moved over to misc as it's an info post. Thanks for posting

Cool, nice post

Overpriced stuff just so they can pay the living wage?

The shop I saw you coming is also a living wage retailer.

The "Living wage" is just a Tory rebranded National Minimum Wage.

...but by all means make a list, just make sure when you do, that the couriers that deliver your parcels are not on bogus self employment contracts (Hermes, Yodel) - with no holiday pay, minimum wage, or workers rights.

Spent 5 minutes clicking "THE LIVING WAGE GIFT GUIDE 2016 is here!"

I don't think I deserve a living wage

No, that's the "National Living Wage". The "Living Wage" came before, the Tories just effectively stole the name.

The government's minimum wage rate is separate to the Living Wage rate … The government's minimum wage rate is separate to the Living Wage rate calculated by the Living Wage Foundation. Unlike the Living Wage Foundation's rates, it is not calculated according to the cost of living, and is therefore lower than what people need to afford a decent standard of living. Full time workers receiving our independently calculated Living Wage earn about £2000 a year more than those on the the governemnt's 'National Living Wage'. This rises to £4000 more a year in London.

I tried it once, was no fun.

My heart bleeds for the "entitled" people who are paid what they're worth in a free market economy. If it wasn't for the minimum wage they would be getting even less.

It is the sense of entitlement that drives me mad. "If I earn more I can have more and I deserve more", well no you don't, most well paid jobs in this country require skills and academic qualifications, you don't have these then tough. Get over yourself!

Ooh, Graham is outraged. What a surprise. X)

Seriously, what's the real problem,? You begrudge people earning a wage they can live on?

Is there no one in your life who can give you a hug?

Maybe he doesn't want them to earn so much so then they can't afford a TV license, and the BBC will subsequently go down the pan.

I'm always outraged, I buy a copy of the Daily Mail every day and its my light relief. People crying they don't earn enough when they get paid the going rate for what they do. Visit their homes and its a huge TV bolted to the wall, iPads and laptops in every room. These people are living beyond their means but no worry society will pick up the tab. A friend worked at a local tesco and half the staff claimed benefits as well as their pay, not because they don't earn enough but they wont cut their cloth accordingly. Wages go up then prices go up so wages need to go up etc. I bet these same people are not bawling about their clothes made India or iPad made in China by people on pennies an hour.

Pay cuts all round. BBC and their billions in TV tax each year. Wonder if Jim I'll Fix It and get it scrapped, oh no wait. Maybe we could get Rolf to draw a picture to further the cause, oh no wait. Perhaps Dave Lee-Travis could do something on his radio show, oh no wait. Perhaps Stuart Hall could.....oh no wait. Sadly three of the above are costing hundreds of thousands a year in pension payments that you make when paying the BBC.

But why are you always outraged? Most people don't live their lives like that because they have a pretty happy existence.

They aren't looking for things to blame everything on. They might get irked every once in a while but you seem to be perpetually on the outlook for something to be angered by. It's not an attractive quality to be quite honest and people don't generally want to invite that type of outlook into their life.

It's nearly Christmas, a time for friends and family to get together - surely that could make your heart grow a few sizes.

He lives near me shall i go round and give him one for christmas

I'm gonna boycott all companies who sign up to this Living Wage nonsense instead of turning around and laughing at how utterly stupid it is to propose an hourly rate people need to live on without taking into account how many hours are worked.

Dumb dumb dumb, these people need a slap not praise.

Exactly. People earn what their worth, but no it's the "entitled to the same as you brigade". The type of bone idle people you see on the debt collector stuff. Want the same as everybody else, so get it hand over fist. I would quite happily stop all benefits except for disability and even that would require and annual review. We're at a point where one third is carrying two thirds.

Scrub floors you get less than a doctor, Stack shelves you get less than a solicitor so get used to the fact you can't have everything your eyes see. Don't even get me started on child and family allowance, I might have a heart attack and Miles will need to come round in his sexy nurse outfit (with lubed syringes)

Have you seen this?-

We listened to him on the radio, he's a great chap with pride and determination.

Puts the never worked brigade to shame. Men of his calibre are few and far between!
