    locksmith question please

Please could someone kindly advise what the bolt does at top of lock? It just turns round and round so I presume it's broken. Thanks in advance

Could be an offset lever. Is the handle on the outside directly opposite the inner door handle. If not its a universal Lever Pad.

Hi handles are in different positions not directly opposite

    it's a catch.

open the door, and with the handle still pushed down, move the top bit round.

it leaves the latch in, so the door can't slam shut.

    A Snib or catch.

Plus if it doesn't do as Adam says and spins it's broken (mine broke like this)

Ok guess it's broken but nothing to worry about thanks all

get right close up to it and look underneath
sometimes there's a small Alan key screw that may need tightening
